This is my favorite all time book. I was working for a bank and helping out a customer one day when he saw a book I was reading, and he suggested this book. I kind of shrugged it off and told him I'd look into it. A bit later in the conversation I find out he's on his way to the airport to fly to Seattle for his daughter's funeral, and then found out he lost his wife a month before. About 20 minutes after he left, he came back with the book and told me I could borrow it if I wanted. Guy is on his way to the airport to bury his daughter, and went back home to get a book for me to look into, so I went home that night and committed to reading the first chapter, and figured I'd return it the next week and say it just wasn't for me. I couldn't put it down. Read all 850 pages in 2 days. When I called him on Monday, and told him I finished the book, he came right down and talked to me about it for an hour on my lunch break, and we kind of make a nice friendship out of it. Cool way to find my favorite book of all time.

This is a really great read. If you are not a fan, don't pass this one up because it's Stephen King. This is one of his best, and was actually selected by the New York Times as one of the top 5 fiction books of the year.

Agreed. Terrific read. The mini series on Hulu with James Franco was a B+ after the read but excellent, especially if you live in Dallas. You'll appreciate all the local references.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE READ IT possible spolier
Im curious if the book goes into more detail about the other side, Ie in the Tv series , Franco is alone and meets 1 other person in an end of world destruction scenario. Anyway the TV series doesn't talk about it much at all, im wondering if the book does. thanks.

Great story. It's one of my favorite books too. It's also the best audiobook ever.

This is by far the best King book since he had that accident in 1999. A lot of his stuff since then has been inconsistent but this stands out. Not a horror story though.

Generally Stephen King is not my thing, but because of the subject I took a shot with this one. It was a truly excellent book and one of my favorites.

Anyone who knows much about King, has he done others in somewhat similar vein, i.e. not horror, but more slightly more down to earth yet kinda sci-fi-ish, based somewhat around historical events?

Maybe I should just read this again, it's been a long time. Smilie
