QNAP just keeps getting worse and worse

....can't even renew Let's Encrypt certificates right now (a fix is in the works) tech support said. same excuse given when they broke HBS for almost a year
I installed TrueNAS Core on mine, works great. Never look back at their crappy OS. Yes I know I could build a TrueNAS machine easily, but you can't get something of this form factor.
With that said, I picked this up last year for $520.

You have a link on how to install TrueNas on the QNAP?

You don't need to do anything special since the QNAP is just another computer with EFI/BIOS and Intel CPU. It's pretty much the same as installing TrueNAS on any other computer.
Download TrueNAS, use something like balenaEtcher to "burn" it to a USB drive, plug USB drive into powered off NAS, power NAS on and hit F2 or Delete key to get into BIOS. Boot from USB drive via Boot tab in BIOS. If you use TrueNAS SCALE, the 2.5G ethernet will automatically work. If you use TrueNAS Core, you'll need to follow https://www.embedded-ideas.de/202...tallation/. This is simply because the Realtek NIC isn't yet supported natively by FreeBSD 12, which TrueNAS Core is based on.

Appreciate the guidance. Opens the door to thinking about other configurations i.e. unRaid. Repped

I couldn't get Unraid to work/boot on this model late last year. Things might have changed since then, but just a heads up. But you are absolutely correct in your thinking, this is just another PC and it will run Linux/Unix for the most part.
