Similar to the other thread with the DJI Spark, there are way better options out there.

I see that I paid $50 for my Tello back on 2/2019 and it was used only a few times. Without a real controller this this is a real bear to control with a phone. Not very responsive at all and I also have (not used any longer) Syma that also had no controller. It was way more responsive than the Tello.

IMHO, you probably will buy this and use it once or twice. The difference between the tello and mini is massive and the tello is not even really valid for taking photos/videos.

Tello couldn't handle any wind and was only good indoors. If that is your use case probably fine, but expect to smash it into things and/or the ceiling/floor.

Edit. It may be a lot better with the controller and it seems like a PS/Xbox controller may work. Interesting and it may force me to bring it out of retirement to play a bit - https://forum.dji.com/thread-139437-1-1.html

I can't argue your logic, but for someone looking to spend $100 or less I think this would be hard to beat.

Mavic mini for 228 seems like the better deal, but 70 bucks is a lot cheaper.

You can get a controller for the Tello, I have it and it does make the drone a lot more usable. I also have a Mavic Mini, which is a much better drone overall, but the Tello is fun if you understand its limitations.

This is more of a fun toy drone for playing around inside, maybe even a little outside. It's really mainly a selfie-type drone.
The Mavic Mini is a legitimate drone capable of flying a decent distance and in rougher conditions that would blow this little guy away.

I get it - but even the comment above yours states something very obvious - its just not fun to use without an external controller and not just your phone. So factor in the price of a controller and you're halfway to the price of the Mini right now from the same seller. Sometimes cutting corners to reduce cost isnt the best solution. This drone went too far IMO.

Yeah, looks like a fun little drone. Found a review with a bunch of hands-on footage using it … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8_c704o6JE

I bought the mini for 170 used in amazon. Returned the Tello. The Tello is bad even for beginners

Bought the tello for $50 also two years ago, "upgraded" from a generic large cheap drone couple of things

pros :

-in no wind it handled better than my cheaper Amazon drone (no remote)
-even though it's tiny (plam of a medium hand) it took a couple of hits really well (the body)
- there's a couple of hacks you can do to increase range which are cool if you are into that
-there are a couple of apps that add extra features like "follow me" mode

cons:

- like other drones this small battery is next to nothing (5 to 8 minutes) max in no wind
-because it's tiny even the slightest wind throws it way off
-the phone app while easy to use still doesn't make flying this thing smooth
-the propellers snap like twigs, coming from a cheap Amazon drone I knew this and bought extras

At this price if it's just a extra drone you would like to have around I say go for it, if it's a first drone for your teenage kid go for it. If it's your first drone that you want to get serious with and have some experience already skip it.

I'm personally waiting for the mav mini to drop another $30

Bought two of these for Christmas two years ago. My son and I have fun with them but they are toys, probably the best toy drone on the market and handles really well indoors or with no wind outdoors.

Tello is probably the lowest price programmable drone you can get (with Python, etc). If you're into STEAM thing.

Should one be concerned that DJI sells a battery safe bag to prevent too much damage from occurring when the batteries burst into flames?

I went ahead and got this for an Xmas gift for a 13 year old boy... Price point was right as long as the warranty was strong.

We'll have some fun programming it.

It is a recommendation for all lipo battery to store in a safe bag.
