Because I'm apparently a shill for them, I'd suggest giving PSO2 Classic a try. The way the story is integrated is UGLY, but it gets better (Fewer Small Scenes) as it goes on. And the rest of the game is easy to play solo, with Bosses and "Event Raids" being the only thing you'll need other people for (And you can Still be anti-social and ignore folks during those if you want as well ;P).
