There is only one reason to buy this laptop: You want an ultra light 15.6" laptop with great battery life and a current gen CPU. The CPU performance is mediocre due to limited cooling, but there are very few options in this weight category and size.

Acer had a 2.2lbs 15.6" Swift 5 a couple of years ago, but they are now limited to 14".

The only competition I can think of is the just announced Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 15.6" OLED, which is even lighter than the LG Gram at 2.31lbs, but has a smaller 63Wh battery and costs $1300 for the i7 version. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1663995-REG/samsung_np950xdb_ke5us_galaxy_book_pro_i7_1165g7.... [bhphotovideo.com]

Edit: The Samsung Galaxy Book Pro has been around for a bit. The Samsung Galaxy Book is the one that was just announced: https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/...5g-laptops Besides the slightly faster CPU, this doesn't compete with the LG Gram as it's a pound heavier (3.51lbs), has a 54Wh battery vs 80Wh on the gram, and has a 300nit screen vs almost 350nit on the Gram. So you are pretty much looking at the $1300 Samsung Galaxy Book Pro if you want an ultra light 15.6" laptop. You get a faster CPU and an OLED display, but it is almost double the price.

Other than that, you are pretty much looking at 14" ultra light laptops, and there are a lot of options in that screen size.

For me, the biggest drawback of this laptop is the ultra glossy screen. Looks like LG didn't apply any anti-reflective coating to the glossy screen, so this is one of the glossiest displays out there. Shouldn't be an issue in environments where you can control the light, but would be a big no if you work in bright environments. I looked into applying a matte screen protector, but it is almost impossible to install those without getting a few ugly bubbles under the film.

Can't beat this price if you are in the market for exactly what this laptop offers, but for most users, they will be better off with a slightly heftier laptop that doesn't have so many compromises. If you are okay with a 14" display, there are so many great options out there at are both light and insanely powerful (all the way up to Ryzen 9 5900HX).

Give me a break. Most people have 1080p on their 24" deskptop monitors without complaints. 1080p on 15.6" has higher dpi than 1440p on a 27" desktop monitor. Even at 1080p, text can be kinda small on a 15.6" display and some people end up increasing text size.

On an ultra book you typically don't want i7 as it eats more battery and runs hotter.
Also, this is an 11th Gen i5 so it's pretty good.

Do you know if this has an HDMI 2.0 port? Can't find the specs on the HDMI port anywhere. It is so annoying when the specs mention HDMI, but omit the version, which is such an important spec.

Good question. I don't know. But the usbc port says 40gbps 5k support so that's another avenue if HDMI port is not 2.0.

Yeah, I owned an LG Gram 17 in the past (8th gen i7 version) and was able to drive a 4K monitor via the usb-c port. It would be nice not to need an active converter to drive a 4K display, and also have the option to drive dual 4k displays, so I always look for laptops with an HDMI 2.0 port. In this day an age, why even bother putting a full size HDMI port in a laptop unless it supports 4k@60Hz.

Yet this is a discount? The Samsung Galaxy book line overall is 'famous' for its frequent discounts and sales, it'll easily go for 1K flat or less. Either way this is still a decent deal

I'm willing to go to 14" (better ppi for 1080p screen) or pay a bit more to go to higher resolution. Oled would be amazing but not at 2x price.

Anything under 3.1 lbs is good enough for my needs. I use my laptop when traveling and my 13.3 hp envy has been ggreat. However its screen is a bit too small for any decent amount of work. I actually prefer glossy screen as content look better on them (if you can control glare).

What other options under $1000 do you recommend?

Galaxy book pro at $850 (old deal) was pretty good but 8gb ram kills it. Need 16gb and 512gb ssd. Hrmm...maybe BF deal with 16gb coming? Gonna hold onto my gram til then.

1080p on 15.6 in display is no bueno. Fuzzy text.
Price is very nice though.
I will wait for the Ryzen model or Intel 12th gen cpus.
Fuzzy text if you're 6 inches away. 1080p is fine on a screen so small, and it lengthens battery life.
