I can't believe how people care about what others get excited over
It adds up. Just buying things I buy anyway, I've saved $160 this year so far with Discover. Will probably add another $50 with Christmas shopping since Amazon and Walmart on on there this quarter.
Combined with my other rewards cards, with just a tiny bit of planning, I net about $600-1000 a year in cashback and travel. It's not nothin'.
I wish they weren't so strict with the grocery store category. None of my go to places count for groceries.

Ever since discovercard cut pretty much every card protection benefit, I only use it for consumables that won't require warranty or other type of protection. Extended warranty is generally worth more than 5%, to me at least.
Is that with greater than $50k deposits? "Platinum" it looks like. Unless by premium you meant something else.
Serious Q, am always looking for good cash back cards.
100k + BOA custom cash card (3% * 1.75). Good thing is doesn't require deposit so could be a Merrell Edge account, so you can for example fund a IRA/trading account (because let's be honest, you don't want 100k in a savings account). However, I don't find Merrell Edge particularly compelling, not enough to justify the 0.25% over Citi Custom Cash.
Good thing about it though, is technically you don't need to use it for groceries. I find "online shopping" a far more compelling category at 5.25%.
I used to remember when they have the greatest coverage and benefits, now it's just any regular credit card for current subscribers.
I agree! Extended warranties, purchase protection, price protection, return guarantees, rental car coverage, flight insurance... These were the perks that got me using Discover solely. Now it's just the great customer service. If that goes down, I'm out.
Amex is just as strict on groceries category. I have that card, but they don't count Walmart or Target grocery purchases for the 6% either. I guess those places sell too many non grocery items. They think you'll buy a TV along with your produce.
The Amex card gives me 6% back at Walmart for grocery pickup. You won't get 6% back in store.
I never understood why I have to "activate" it. Why don't I just get it?
They want people to know they're getting it otherwise there's no incentive for them to give away free money. Also I suppose a lot of people don't bother to activate it.

Thanks. It makes sense.
I would like to give you a rep but that button is missing. That always happens to me.
Incorrect -- Target also gives 5% back on their Red Card, so keep that in mind when considering how to use Discover bonus.
Your comment is objectively wrong. This is useful, AND Target's bonus is useful.
I am actually interested in understanding what you are saying here. I am so lost that I am not sure what I am missing. The 3 parts I am confused on I have shared my understanding of in hopes you can help find the information I am not understanding.
TIA
1) To me the word also and already are both accurate. They both explain a state of being that is constant and at the same level as the promoted deal. Saying that it already offers that, does not in any way negate the fact the discover WILL offer it. In fact saying already actually has implied elements that the other one is still not active, where also would imply they are both currently the same.
2) I am confused by what you mean objectively wrong. Objectively means without emotion/personal opinion. My best guess is that you are saying that the person gave an opinion as appose to facts to let others make opinions. However I think I must be wrong, because I can not imagine someone critiquing someone for giving an opinion without being objective and given just the facts to then offer their view saying its useful. That is a counter opinion but lacks just as much objectivity.
3) Useful is a subjective term. The fact you find a specific thing useful vs not, does not make it universal. I easily could make an argument that discovers 5% back is better then targets 5% back as with discover card you can buy gift cards with your 5%back that come loaded with a bonus which means you stretched that 5% even more. To some that would make it more useful then the Target Card. However for the people who will get the full 5% back from just using discover at the gas station during that 3 month period, you would effectively be only getting 1% back for shopping at target. To them it would not be useful at all and they are better off using their target card to get the 5% and using discover just on the gas for that quarter.
IIRC, even walmart self contained grocery stores don't qualify. I also argued a restaurant charge to a buffet place, but the restaurant placed the charge as a connected supermarket.. so I felt ok because I lowered the tip to 10% instead of 15... after they jacked up their prices anyway.
Can any of you please confirm if any of the following stores are considered as Grocery by Discover? - Food Lion, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods
Asked the Discover chat representative - Kroger and Food Lion qualify as grocery stores while Harris Teeter does not. Hope someone finds this useful in Q1
