You actually don't even need the phone at all. Sounds weird, but as long as you enter an IMEI that passes their compatibility check and qualifies you for the promo, you can just order the SIM and then activate it online. No need to put the sim into a phone at all to activate it. Once it is activated online the service is started, and that is what counts for the 90 days of active service terms.

True story, for this promo I used the IMEI of an iPhone 12 that I got from visible and had already sold(!), but still had the IMEI written down somewhere, and used that to pass the compatibility check and order the SIM card. Once I got the shipping confirmation the next day, I activated my service online (select "I already rec'd my SIM card'), and ported in my expiring Tello number...all before receiving the physical SIM card, which looks like it will be delivered tomorrow.

I've done this BYOD promo several times over the years and never had a problem receiving the git card. They don't check if you are actually using the SIM or phone it was signed up with, just that you have the active line and are paying the bills. Of course, YMMV!
I looked at their site and do not see any option for talk/text only. I also see that you must have Xfinity internet, so many of us do not have any options with them. For those of you who do, sounds like a nice deal.
I used google voice number in the past for BYOD promo and always work. you need to unlock your google voice number from google unlock page [google.com] and pay $3. I recommended to change your voicemail PIN in the google voice setting. This is going to be used by mobile provider for porting. After you complete the unlocking of your GV number, go to xfinity website and place the BYOD order. You should be able to select google voice as your carrier and select "keep my number" to use your GV number. Xfinity will send you the sim card. The porting process start once you receive your sim card and start the activation process. It may take few days to complete the activation. As long as you provide the GV number account information correctly including the PIN (use GV number if you never setup PIN), the porting should be smooth and easy. At the end you need only to pay extra $2 per month for an additional line within the shared plan. .

Do they still have the Unltd. Talk/Text plan that cost almost nothing as OP said?
Had a chat with a online rep of Xfinity. They said that there is no talk/text only plan any more and the minimum you need to pay would be the 1GB/month plan at 15 dollars every month. For my purpose, the only way I would move a number to xfinity is to the talk/text only plan, which makes it a no-go for me personally.

do we need to put the sim card in the matching imei phone?
YES, they must have change it recently. I activated my sim yesterday and tried put it in an unlocked phone and it would disable service, it will redirect my call to xfinity CS everytime try to make a call. Put the sim back in the orginal IMEI phone work again. I've try many times to verify that.

What's up Ho, I think any carrier would qualify. Best is Google Voice. It's on their drop-down menu.

Don't you need the actual device to complete the port? Or can you even do that online in your Xfinity account?

I swapped a SIM to a different phone a few days ago. If you go to the device in the online portal, it should note that you swapped the SIM and will even offer the option to "pair" the new device and SIM. I did that but it didn't update the device description for the line.

Try calling live rep to help you activate your Google Voice. It takes a couple of days for the porting to go through.

Per se they don't really have a talk and text plan. But what you do is to get the 1gb shared plan for $15 a gb/month and turn off data. That way you'll have unlimited talk and text. 😉

I don't have that problem. Used it on an unregistered Pixel 3a and call and text goes thru.

But then you still have to pay 15 a month whereas the attraction used to be having an additional line for call and text for almost free (i.e. about 2 dollars of taxes/fees a month).

yes, you are right but.....it is gone. the $15 shared plan is not bad though where you can park your 5 lines for very cheap and wait for your $1,000 gc.
