Yes, but you'll have to spend many $100s of dollars to even use one of the new Alderlakes… On top of buying the chip. New mobo, new ddr5 ram… It'll be almost a $1k to get even the i5 working with components that you already have.

Plus your energy bill will go up and you'll need a room a/c to be able to survive while playing anything…

You might as well go for the extra two cores as they could provide beneficial to VM performance possibly, along with other tasks that are required for the computer to do. For this price point, I personally would get the 5700G but since I have a dGPU, I'm getting the 5800x. I'd get the 5700G if I didn't have a dGPU is what I'm saying.

I'm still rocking a 1400 in my computer. I presume the performance of even the 5600g would be a big step up. Without knowing the specifics about my motherboard, are these CPUs compatible with any motherboard that supported 1400?

Nope. I have a 1700 and my itx ab350 isn't. There was news of beta bios supporting 5000 series last yr, but nothing materialized.

Current ddr5 is only 1-2% faster due to latency. It will take ddr5 some time to mature to actually be faster and more beneficial than ddr4. The huge price prem on ddr5 isn't worth it right now.

Personally, I'd be willing to forgo the 5% - 8% performance and pay 30% less for a CPU that's built using the same Zen 3 architecture. A quick OC can close the gap some with the only real difference being a larger cache on the 5600x (32MB vs 16MB), while the 5600g will include integrated graphics which believe me, come in handy if you're having issues with your dedicated GPU, or any troubleshooting really
