I'm glad you did. Editor's note compares it to a worse sale in June, making this look like the best option ever. It's a matter of a few dollars, so no biggie, but slick dealers like to stay informed and that's what you're doing!

3.57 complexity rating on BGG.

Does anyone have personal experience on how easy/difficult it is to pickup the rules of this game for casual players?
It's fairly complex, but I managed to play through it with an 8 and 10 year old with a little bit of hand holding. I wouldn't call it casual though, in the sense that you might play a game of Monopoly once a year and be good with it. It's something that you want to play at least once a week if you can. Waiting much longer than that leads to forgetting the narrative, your characters abilities, and the rules of the game.

With that being said, it's one of the most fun games I've ever played. Just started the full version of the game last week!

I love board games. The complexity of this doesn't scare me but I'm not sure I'll like the game. I'm not a d&d fan though I've never tried. I don't like the idea of making a story and all that, I just want to play the game. Would this be a bad buy?

My buddy and I ran through 8 or 9 scenarios so far and it has been a good time. The gameplay is a bit tricky to get a hold of at first, but the game does a great job of introducing you to the mechanics slowly. My buddy is a 9/10 in boardgame complexity, I'm more of a 4/10.
I also watched some videos of the character I picked, which helped me do better.

One of the most fun gaming experiences I've ever had with my family. Now playing big box Gloomhaven and I miss my Red Guard's Strangling Chain so bad.

No, it would be a wonderful buy. This has a veneer of a dungeon crawler and D&D vibes, but it's actually a tactical puzzle and the story element is very light. Every scenario you basically move around and kill monsters before they kill you, but you do it by evaluating combinations of cards and planning carefully.

Yes. It's marvelous in that it's literally designed to open the box and go; the first five scenarios are a tutorial that teaches you the game and assumes no Gloomhaven experience.

Recommended for casual players unreservedly.

This is actually perfect then. Think of it as a dungeon crawl without all of that messy role playing. Smilie

Gloomhaven isn't a role-playing game like D&D. It presents a scenario through some light preset storytelling and your goal is to simply complete it with a constantly diminishing amount of actions. It's really a puzzle game more than anything with a bit of randomness that you're trying to mitigate between scenarios. The story itself can be mostly ignored, if I'm being honest, since most scenarios are just "kill all the things" or "kill these specific things".

Played today for the first time and felt the same. It seems mostly just some randomized random killings. Some things re unnecessarily overly complicated I felt. Set up took forever and kids lost interest by then. Had to stop eventually as they were sleepy. Might restart over the weekend let's see if they want to resume or not.

I wouldn't suggest playing this with kids younger than 12. It's not a "fun" game as much as there's a satisfaction in being able to "solve the puzzle". Setup is a bit lengthy but it should get faster the more you play. And the "overly complicated" aspects are all there for a reason which you'll learn to appreciate as you continue to play. Keep giving it an honest chance, even if you end up playing solo, and I'm sure you'll eventually grow to like it. It really is a great game but it does require some effort to get into.

Absolutely. I'm playing with 12 and 8 yr old. I'm sure 8yr old won't get much but hopefully 12 yr picks up eventually. Let's see. Thx for the suggestions tho.
