Might be sacrilege in a Lego thread, but I have seen some of the 10x10 knockoff plates at the Dollar Tree, and they are completely tolerable. Not like the little knockoff bricks that don't fit right and then get mixed in with the general population of real Lego bricks. I got a handful of these for my kids and they worked fine.

Having said that, under 5 bucks is a really good deal for genuine baseplates:
