I was under the impression these things were outlawed due to well-documented safety issues.

We have one. It served us well for our elder child (6yrs ago), and now we're using it with the younger sibling. It's highly practical. We used it with the higher platform when they were infants as an infant crib. Moved them to a full size crib when they got bigger, and started using it as a playpen. Once the baby starts to walk, their weight become high enough that it's a topple risk. So it'll last a good year.

I wouldn't say there is any safety risk as long as you know when to stop using it.

If I remember right, the safety issues were when people put another mattress into the pack and play. No mattress except the included one is safe for a pack and play. In fact an Amazon listing from a major manufacturer for one aftermarket mattress has a legal disclaimer in all caps LOL.

From birth till about 1 year old. A few months with the base on top (as a crib) and the rest with the base at the bottom (as a playpen). It may be a bit less or a bit more than a year depending on the weight of your baby. Eventually you'll realize the baby's weight has become enough that continued use is unsafe. You'll need a full size crib by that age anyway.

I think you may be conflating this product and the rock and play. The rock and plays were great for most kids, but some kids suffocated in them, tragically.

this is a great product. just do not alter what they give you.

we used it, my sister used it, and then we used it again. it has served our family well for almost 10 years.

Isn't the bassinet instead needed to use this as a crib?
