Typically, their age is close to the size of the shirt/pants. My son is 10 and he is wearing size 10. My daughter is 8 and she is wearing size 8. But, if a kid is more on the smaller or bigger side (shorter/taller side), then they would wear a different size.

Update to add... You can usually check on the site you're shopping on if they have a size chart.
Measurements are always more accurate than age (but not as easy to get, esp if you are buying a gift) which is why I said typically, meaning kids near the 50th percentile (which 3/4 of my kids are). I noticed on the WM size charts, the boys' regular has age ranges but the girls' regular doesn't. I find that many size charts don't have ages but some do like this one...https://www.frenchtoast.com/girls-size-chart The size charts on this site are similar to what I was saying, the size is close to the age. They get more off as the kid gets older. It's annoying but there can be a big range is sizing (like running small or big) between brands and different stores (but some sites let reviewers note that, which is helpful). If in doubt, size up. Too big is better than too small. Smilie But, pjs are supposed to be close fitting b/c of fire safety. That said, out of anything I feel like pjs are more likely to run small (arms too tight/neck hole too tight) so I would order size up if in doubt on those too. I bought the Baby Yoda for my 8-year-old daughter and went ahead and got sz 8 b/c 10-12 would be too big (I think) and she really wants Baby Yoda stuff for Christmas.

Most pjs run smaller rather than bigger, especially after washing. My 8 year old grandson takes a 10-12, my 4 year old granddaughter is a 5 or 6. Both are tallish but not heavy. I'd only buy the same size as the age if the child is on the small size for his/her age.
