There is a guy running a print farm with these if anyone wants his opinion. It's "new tech inventors". He swears by them and likes them because of the low start up cost. For what its worth.

Probably not as bad as the old Anets (A8 etc.) so for the price it's ok.

As long as you're aware that these require a lot more tinkering than the already extensive amount of tinkering 3D printers require, it's a great deal.

There was a Reddit post about the older models of this brand starting a house fire, so the first recommendation is to swap out the power supply.

The guy left the machine unattended, but that's almost expected with long prints.

As someone who has owned and used an Anet A8 since July 2017, over four years ago, and has racked up countless hours of print time with it, I feel qualified to weigh in.

The A8's biggest flaws were its electrical connections. Large gauge wiring that the user was supposed to fit into too small of main board connectors, primarily the heated bed. I quickly realized this flaw and added a dual mosfet, primarily for the heated bed. This way, the main board only used enough current to control the mosfet, which in turn did the heavy current work. Along with the mosfets, I added heavier gauge wiring. The next week link was the connection to the heat bed itself. I revamped it and added heat bed strain relief, as well as strain relief for the hot end (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2611891). Problem solved. I never did use the second mosfet to control the heat block, as its amperage needs were sufficiently met by the main board. With both the heat bed and the heat block on at the same time, they drew less than the 20 amps of the power supply's rating. I made these mods early on in my ownership. My A8's original board got an upgrade to Skynet firmware.

I am aware that many A8 users replaced their power supplies due to the recommendations of other Anet users. These same users also suggested replacing mostly everything else as well: main board, power supply, firmware, frame, LCD panel, and on-and-on. I resisted because I found the power requirements of the A8 were met by its stock power supply. Its acrylic frame remains a weakness but can be stiffened with the Hulk mods and more. But, for its time, in some ways it was better as well. Dual Z-motors and a direct drive that handles a broader range of filaments.

Since then, I now own a Creality Ender 3 and a Creality CR-10S Pro V2 (5-stars!!!). I still own my A8 and will likely never sell it. I value it for what it taught me about 3D printing, different filaments, Cura Slicer, Tinkercad and especially Fusion 360. It has been my best learning tool for this hobby.

Don't buy an Anet model if you don't want it because of its specs and user ratings. But don't be dissuaded from Anet by over four-year-old pictures of one of the early Anet machines new to this hobby. Remember, Creality didn't even have a 3D printer in 2017. Much has been learned by the entire industry since then.

I feel like the Ender 3 is the bar for a beginner printer. Anything that is comparable to an Ender 3 for around $100 seems like a good deal for a "My first 3d printer" situation. Any opinions on how this compares to the 1st gen Ender 3?

I also have an A8 from early 2018. My mods that I have added:
Server power supply - I have several around and they are 700w
dual mosfets
bowden extruder setup
soldered build plate wires to it
adhesive build plate that stays on it.
custom firmware
x and y belt tensioners that were printed

I trust my prints to be level at the start even after sitting unused for a month. I think the longest print I have done was 46 hours. Yes there was a lot of tinkering at the beginning, but I learned so much about it in the process. Only thing I regret is not printing with abs sooner, since all i heard was how much harder it was over pla....i won't buy another pla roll

Cant even compare the two, these are in different league. All metal aluminum profile body makes it so much better. Although Anet is known to use bottom line components this still would be nice upgrade. Basically you would not have to re-level this printer which is an indication of stiffness.

I work with 3D printers daily. For a beginner printer I'd go creality to learn and have mistakes with (ender 3 is 99 at microcenter with coupon) over this one. If you want to minimize early mistakes then go with a Prussa. You'd be surprised how many corps use prussas in their labs and maker spaces.

Now if you have some money to shell out, the best desktop fdm printer in my opinion is Ultimaker. But at that point it's not a diy printer as it's ready out the box.

Ender 3 for $99? That's a front page deal. Got any links?

You bought this same printer? Or an A8? Cause it sounds like they're not comparable. If you've owned the ET4X and it was crap, I'd really like to know.

I'm on a tight budget of about $100, so I can't just buy an Ender 3 V2 because it's better. The extra cost makes it not an option. So if this is gonna be a nightmare, I'll just wait for another offer to come up.

Oh I think I found your microcenter deal mentioned. You'll need a time machine and an 800 mile drive to get that deal. It was in only a few select stores. Any other available deals that you would recommend over this one? If I lived near a microcenter that had that deal in stock, I would've jumped on it. But like many other people, I don't. So next option.
