Some other things to consider with a NAS.

Power Protection: I paired my 920+ with a cyberpower SL 750 VA. I use it only for the NAS and it recognizes it without issues. Estimated run time is 70 mins and it has 12GB of ram and fully populated with 4 TB iron wolves. I have it set to start down safely long before the battery runs low.

backups : if you use this as primary storage for family photos and things you don't want to loose. Then I would look into a cloud back up solution Synology C2, Backblaze B2, or others. At the very least I would set up hyperbackup to an external hard drive via USB. Yes the raid helps to protect against drive failures but if the Nas unit dies or is stolen the back ups will allow to to get your data.

Security: if you access these remotely definitely look up videos on options on how to secure them as best as possible for remote access. There was a recent widespread attack on these if people left default settings in place. Wundertech YouTube channel is a great place to start.

Yes this can run a Plex server, yes it can transcode multiple streams at once. And no, THIS DEAL IS NOT LIVE YET. Read the post please!!

I got this same deal earlier this year and have it set up as my Plex Server. Transcodes 1080p with no issue remotely and Direct Plays everything I have locally, including full untouched 4K rips that are ~80-100 Mbps. So yes, good choice for Plex Server.

Amazon has the same deal.

https://www.amazon.com/Synology-B...961&sr=8-2
If one have the CC giving a discount when one uses CC reward points as part of payment, can lower Amazon's price by $15 to $30 since this is shipped and sold by Amazon.

If that CC giving the discount is an Amex card with Amazon offer, one can still earn 5% back if offer is available.

Also if I get two 4tb drives and mirror them, that gives me backups right?
Then I can also have either cloud back or external HD as a 3rd backup safe. Am I correct? Thanks
Mirrored is not backup because if you delete something on one it will be deleted on the other disk automatically.

Configure each of your two disks as individual drives (no raid) and configure each drive with a obvious name such as DiskA and DiskB.

Use disk a for files and use disk b as a backup target. Windows backup, time machine or manual backup is fine.

When you fill up disk a, take the disk out, put in a larger disk, and restore your backup to it.

I currently have a DS713+ which is now dated and gets sluggish with docker *arr containers and Plex (native) because the NAS doesn't support a lot of RAM and perhaps the CPU can't handle things.
Will this solve my issues?
I really don't want to spend a lot and upgrade to the DS720+ unless I need to.

No, that's not a backup. It just makes it more resilient in case a harddrive fails. But it is not a backup.

How is this qnap vs the ds920+ as far as easy of use for first timer and availability of different uses/apps/containers?

I know hardware wise the qnap is better but I'm a noob to NAS

Mostly for file storage, backups, sharing with my own devices in home and wirelessly and starting plex 4k streaming to my laptop phone tablet and fire tv cube . Probably going with backblaze as an offsite of the NAS

Kind of newbie here so please go easy! - I had my myWD OS stop supporting my current hard disc and looking to something that could stay with me for few years without having to upgrade. I see that DS220 is from 2017. would it be also seeing end of service soon? I dont want to spend $200+ on something that would die in a year or two...

Not sure what you planning to do with the unit. I am not very technical and have the older model DSJ 218+ - never an issue. I think you will probably have more potential of the drives failing than the NAS failing. Like the company and bought this unit to increase NAS storage along with the WD Red Drives.

Two things I need
1. Mobile remote support
2. Auto back up of few devices that's all nothing too complicated

Cannot help you regarding mobile remote support.

I am sure the auto backup will not be an issue. Maybe others can chime in.

You will be spending quite a bit by the time you add in the drives. Seems like an overkill if the backup does not require significant storage.

Where do you see that the DS220+ is from 2017? The nomenclature is that the DS is for DiskStation, the first 2 is for how many harddrives it supports (2 in this case, the last two digits are the first year it came out, so 2020, the + is the series level (there's often a j, a value (not indication), the plus and then the XS/XS+ series. For the 2 bay, this is their top of the line right now. It has a 2 year warranty.

I just retired a DS414j from an office setting that was in use from the end of 2014 and used through 2019. Their data use increased drastically. I'm currently using two DS218+ going on 3 years now and they're both working fine.

Thank you for the help!
Another option for a backup to cloud storage is iDrive, which makes an app that runs from the Synology and backs up from there to the cloud (so that you don't need to run the cloud backup from your main computer). I have had the iDrive service for about a year and a half, and it's been good.

I have an old USB portable drive that requires iDrive account to run.

Does iDrive have free accounts?

Sorry, just seeing this. iDrive's free account is good only for 5GB. So it's likely not of use for your USB portable drive. (Not sure why your USB portable drive would require iDrive's online backup to run. Maybe we're talking about different iDrive companies / services. But anyway.)

Thanks - I am not sure either. I think it is a 1TB drive. The computer cannot access the drive. I remember something about needing an Idrive account for it to work.

Anyway, it was not worth the hassle of trying to find a solution for such small capacity on such an old device. Was just hoping someone knew the answr.
