I got this laptop this morning. I had bought the $279 frontpage deal from Wal-Mart a month earlier, but I returned it last week as soon as I saw the Target ad.

This is so much better than the Wal-Mart one.

Display: IPS panel by LG, with vastly better viewing angles and colors than the Chi-Mei TN panel on the Wal-Mart version
CPU: 4-core Tiger Lake i3 vs. the 2-core in the Wal-Mart version
WiFi: The spec page indicates a 1x1 card, but the actual card contained within is a 2x2 card; the Wal-Mart version only had a 1x1 card
Price: $10 cheaper than the Wal-Mart version

And just like the Wal-Mart version, it has two RAM slots, with one populated (DDR4-3200) and one free.

The one and only downside is that the SSD is half the size and is SATA. But if you're going to be opening the computer anyway to throw an extra stick of RAM in, it's not hard to also replace the SSD and upgrade it to something like 500GB. The other upgrade that I'm making, since I'm opening the system up anyway, is replacing the WiFi with an Intel AX201 (can find them for around $10 used on eBay) so that I get WiFi 6.

I've been looking for a laptop in the sub-$300 price bracket to replace the aging dinosaur that my parents are using, and this is by far the best I've seen yet (though it does involve a few simple upgrades to make it great).
This is absolutely a front page deal. The RAM and the storage are on the low end, but it has the quad-core version of an i3 (vs. a dual-core in most budget laptop deals).

If I had to settle for a budget laptop, I'd rather have a faster CPU and an IPS screen. Especially if RAM and SSD can later be upgraded (which I haven't verified).
What else do 80% of people do with their computers? Most people aren't engineers, video editors, or high end gamers. If you can smoothly use MS Office, surf the web, and do some media streaming/playback most people are happy. What am I missing?

Thanks. I do not know if it comes with the necessary software to perform a clean install of Windows S or Windows home or anything for that matter. So far there are Windows S mode software issues, automatically enabling itself after users disabling it, update and bios issues. This means I will likely not purchase anything containing Windows S mode software, especially not as a gift. Slickdeals users on other threads have had multiple issues as well.
You do not need any special software to reinstall Windows. All you need is a USB drive and the media creation tool that Microsoft provides for you at the Windows download website. Then run that tool, select install for another PC, and let it write the Windows installer to your USB drive. Then boot from the drive, hit custom, and delete your Windows partition, make a new one, and then select it. Hit next, and let it run through the installation process.

Right now at many local stores, yes. I'd keep checking in to see if the stores get more stock during the week.

I don't care about the touch screen. Don't even know the difference between the GPU. I just do basic stuff, surf the web, watch movies, email, office, etc. No gaming.

If I put on 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, it would be a lot cheaper than the Lenovo. Would it be worth it?
I would say so. It's why I bought this for my parents, since they're in the same boat in terms of usage requirements.

Would this be great for my 70 year old parents lol
It really depends on the old parents. I have a 15" laptop with similar spec (i3 but two years old) for my 98 yr old grandfather and he is rocking it. I did have to adjust the font size in the system to the largest and have teamviewer installed so I can provide remote technical assistance.

Thanks for the heads up, I picked it up. It checked everything I was wanting In a laptop 14" 1080p, lightweight, upgradeable ram storage and wifi. I already have 16GB of ram and 256GB nvme drive at home I can use for it.

Beats my 7 year Acer laptop and all for less than $285 with tax. Only using it for RDP, VPNs, and webGUIs. Shouldn't have any issues with it.

Unfortunately, not everyone is educated on how to switch to normal from S mode.
It doesnt require any tech knowledge, just the ability to read.

With 128gb ssd, how much of it is free? To swap ssd, do you need a cloning software?

Depends on what they need. Once I switched my mom to a Chromebox with monitor setup I haven't had to support it at all. I switched out a Chromebox that was end of life, but that's it for close to 10 years.

I'm sure it will fit, but I am skeptical it'll work at gen4 speeds. I assume it will most likely fallback on gen3.
The CPU supports Gen 4 that does not mean the Motherboard does so YMMV.

Like it so far. Nice display and Very responsive. It's unlikely someone changed to a Samsung nvme ssd and returned it. It's actually not that easy to take the back off without leaving a single mark for this laptop. Both laptops had perfect case. Can Anyone has it check what ssd you have in it?

I have yet to pick mine up but I may cancel target order for this staples deal.

Same processor, more ram, hard-drive, screen , wifi 6. For 100 more and windows 11. I'm sure there are more. Still an hp
