I got this laptop this morning. I had bought the $279 frontpage deal from Wal-Mart a month earlier, but I returned it last week as soon as I saw the Target ad.

This is so much better than the Wal-Mart one.

Display: IPS panel by LG, with vastly better viewing angles and colors than the Chi-Mei TN panel on the Wal-Mart version
CPU: 4-core Tiger Lake i3 vs. the 2-core in the Wal-Mart version
WiFi: The spec page indicates a 1x1 card, but the actual card contained within is a 2x2 card; the Wal-Mart version only had a 1x1 card
Price: $10 cheaper than the Wal-Mart version

And just like the Wal-Mart version, it has two RAM slots, with one populated (DDR4-3200) and one free.

The one and only downside is that the SSD is half the size and is SATA. But if you're going to be opening the computer anyway to throw an extra stick of RAM in, it's not hard to also replace the SSD and upgrade it to something like 500GB. The other upgrade that I'm making, since I'm opening the system up anyway, is replacing the WiFi with an Intel AX201 (can find them for around $10 used on eBay) so that I get WiFi 6.

I've been looking for a laptop in the sub-$300 price bracket to replace the aging dinosaur that my parents are using, and this is by far the best I've seen yet (though it does involve a few simple upgrades to make it great).
This is absolutely a front page deal. The RAM and the storage are on the low end, but it has the quad-core version of an i3 (vs. a dual-core in most budget laptop deals).

If I had to settle for a budget laptop, I'd rather have a faster CPU and an IPS screen. Especially if RAM and SSD can later be upgraded (which I haven't verified).
What else do 80% of people do with their computers? Most people aren't engineers, video editors, or high end gamers. If you can smoothly use MS Office, surf the web, and do some media streaming/playback most people are happy. What am I missing?

You do realize that this I3 came out in Q1 of this year (21). How is this old and 279 tax included for red card is far from 400 dollas.
The i3-1125G4 remains a sleeper that gets passed on too easily by those that believe the marketing hype. The quad core i3 CPUs introduced by Intel beginning in the 8th generation are i5 CPUs in all but name.

Anyone shopping for a solid budget laptop should basically account for the price of the RAM upgrade and RUN to this deal right now. Even accounting for the cost of the RAM upgrade this is likely still a lower total price than the last i3-1125G4 deal at Target ($340).

Good luck!

Would this laptop be acceptable to use for some basic home audio recording? Not alot of tracks or effects, mainly acoustic music...

I got in on the Sweetwater sale for the Berhinger audio interface for $19

I'm assuming there is no soldering needed here, just basic screwing and unplugging? I used to do this stuff on my desktop decades ago and consider myself handy. But I have never opened up a laptop.

Guessing this is a YouTube DIY somewhere and some patience to install ram and ssd?

Any perspective appreciated.

Sold by 3rd party? Any sold by Amazon?
Search 4gb ddr4 3200 laptop ram on Amazon. And while the ram isn't sold by Amazon directly, it is still prime.

Good price if you're looking for a step up from a chromebook, but there's not much you can do with this laptop other than youtube, internet browsing, and typing up documents.
I have seen this kind of comments for years.

So no upgrade on CPU or youtube/internet gets heavier accordingly?

Even for general video editing most people's needs are pretty basic/tame.

4GB on Windows 11 is barely even usable at this point. anyone confirm whether it's upgradable? Perhaps possibly since it's DDR4-3200 instead of some form of LPDDR4 (which as far as I know, is always soldered)
