This is the cheapest price for print plus digital on the economist, typically it's $75 for print + digital, or about $50-$55 for print only.
I prefer to read in print, however the digital option is good for 2 reasons:
1) the app also gives you real time current news (print is once a week)
2) the digital version includes audio narration, and it's not some computer text to voice, someone is actually reading the articles to you. Very helpful if you are an audio person or if you like to listen to news while driving, working, etc.
Regarding the magazine itself, I won't speak to it's bias as like most things there will be nothing perfectly balanced. However, I do find it to have the most in depth articles of any news outlet and it covers topics that typically would not be mentioned in mainstream news. For that alone, the publication is worth a read.
Regarding ads, yes this magazine has ads like any magazine but it's not like an ad on every page like you might find in People magazine or something. The app has ads too but not obtrusive annoying ones that pop up all the time.
My only gripe with the economist is that it's not an easy read and it takes some time to read the magazine, and you will probably find yourself unable to keep up with the issues because the magazine arrives once a week (unless you have atleast 2-3 hours a week dedicated to reading the magazine). However, I guess that depends on how much you read and how quickly you read.
Lastly, when you order from discount mags, it typically takes 8 plus weeks for your first issue and digital code to arrive, just a heads up.

I wish Businessweek still had deals, a much breezier read (although doesn't come close in international coverage). Damn Bloomberg.
