I have the charge 4. Most stats are accessible without premium.
I'm no engineer but what part could Fitbit even skimp out on? The battery? Lower frequency heart monitor?

I don't think the devices themselves are very expensive. Most of the cost in a Fitbit is for R&D and brand recognition + access the software ecosystem.

But I'm happy to be corrected.
And for the record I'm still using my Charge 2 from 2018. I smashed it against hard surfaces and got it wet washing my hands and bathing my dog more than just a few times. Some people must be very unlucky or very bad owners.

If you're buying this over a smartwatch it's because you're focused on your health and don't want features that distract you and eat up your battery. For that purpose innovation in the charge line has not improved enough to warrant an upgrade, even from gen 2 to 5. Most of the features Fitbit has layered on over the years are bullshit meant to entice you into a premium subscription.

I'm primarily after my calorie burn and sleep quality and neither of those things would be better if I upgraded my 3-year old device.

Thank you! It works for me. I am on the fence trying to decide between this and Mi 6. My primary need is to monitor sleep, SpO2 and steps.

I had original Fitbit Charge from 2015. Still works like a rock and battery pretty much last 7 days! Finally, I pulled the trigger and ordered this one. My wife's Alta died in 2 years. She has charge 4 for almost 2 years and still going strong. Battery is 5 days if you disable GPS but she doesn't get notifications anymore even after the frequent updates

You're the luckiest one to ride on Fitbit for long time. Mine, Charge 3 lasted 13 months, Display is broken (no physical damage)

How does it compare to Halo view fitness tracker, which is available for preorder from Amazon $49.99. Similar features and functions, no GPS though.

I'm telling you all right now unless you get the warranty it's not gonna last more then a year.
I bought 2 one for me and one for my mom. The plastic tabs that connect to the band are prone to breaking.
Mines broke at the one year mark and i bought my mother a Samsung watch. Her fitbit broke within 2 months after i started using it for my workouts.
Never again will i own a Fitbit product until they fix their quality issues.
I just bought a Garmin venu SQ and i wish i would have done it sooner

I'm in the market for a fitness tracker and never had one before. I was comparing between the Charge 4 and 5. With sales tax, the Charge 4 from walmart would be about $75 for me. I can also get the Charge 5 from AAFES for $119 with no sales tax (https://www.shopmyexchange.com/fi...er/2956252). So wondering if the extra ~$45 is worth it for the Charge 5.

From my understanding, pros of the Charge 5 over the Charge 4 are: better display, ECG and EDA sensors, better design (e.g. steel instead of plastic case, slightly thinner, more comfortable silicone band?). And the cons of the Charge 5 vs the Charge 4 are that the Charge 5 dropped the altimeter (which is a bummer but not a show stopper for me), no Spotify support (don't care about this), no weather app (don't care about this).

Are there any other notable differences? I'm not going to pay extra for the premium subscription so I'm not sure if there are any differences related to what's available as a "free" feature between these items. Appreciate any feedback on helping me make a decision.

I think you have that all straight.

For either one you'd probably want to get a custom band anyway. The stock bands trap sweat and have a bit of a "kid safe" aesthetic to them.
Leather bands from Amazon look great and last about a year.

Costco is selling the Charge 5 with a bonus sports band (https://www.costco.com/fitbit-cha...04989.html). Does the sweat issue occur with the sports band? I would hope not with the extra holes in them.

The Costco total price would be about $136 for me (with sales tax and shipping charge). So about $16 extra compared to buying from AAFES. It looks like the official sports bands go for around $25-$30. So maybe it's better to buy from Costco to get the extra band (and also their 90 day return policy on smart watches, which they probably classify the Charge 5 to be)? I'm not sure how durable the fitbit bands are and if users usually need to replace bands. I know I've had to change the resin bands at least every couple years on regular watches before.

I can't speak for the sports band myself but it looks breathable. I wouldn't upgrade from a $70 charge 4 just for a free band combo. Better off getting the charge 4 and buying exactly the band you want with the $50+ difference.

$25 for a wristband is outrageous, official or not.

Charge 4 should be ok, per my 15 months ownership. At this price charge 5 is not that attractive.
