I have Alltrails Pro and the app is constantly pinging Facebook via graph.facebook.com and other trackers when launched and while in use. Since it requires GPS access, AllTrails is going to pass this information along also. I don't launch this app despite having Pro since it refuses to function when certain trackers are blocked.

I would recommend Hiking Project [hikingproject.com] (backed by REI) which is Free and feature rich.

This was a life saver (maybe literally) in national parks last year where there was no cell coverage. With Apple Watch it would alert you if you were headed off trail.

I was considering buying this a few months back, then found that my public library offers free pro memberships through their website. I'm in CO. No idea if typical, might be worth a check.

Offline maps work fine for navigating, but the distance and altitude trackers aren't even close to accurate while offline. Distances often off by 25% or more and altitude gain even more. Numbers on saved recordings would then correct to something close to correct once I got back online later. Still probably worthwhile for the route finding though. There's a handy little alert if you go more than 50 feet (meters?) off the trail.

What device are you using? I'm using an iPhone 6+. Works fine for me.

Something it will not do is to find any dirt road to take, the only roads it finds is paved roads. Unless they have implemented my suggestion; I suggested it and they seemed to like the idea.

I live near many mazes of dirt roads. I need to be able to plan a trip through the maze; select the dirt roads to take. This application does not make that easy. It is possible to draw a planned trip by dragging the mouse, like the way a simple drawing program works. That does not work for what I need to do. It would work well if it could connect waypoints to create a route but it does not do that. I can try to follow a route by going from waypoint to way point but it will not record a trip at the same time as showing the points. In many ways it is close to being useful for what I need but it just does not have the last 10%.
