Btw, I saw 4TB ones for 68.99 in B&H and thought maybe I over paid for these in Newegg. I compared the two and turns out model are different. B&H one is WD40EFRX with 64MB Cache and Newegg one is WD40EFZX with 128MB Cache. I paid $76.99 with $8 coupon. Don't know about you, but $8 more for 64MB more cache sounds not so bad at all.

What type of files? If it's pics and videos from phones then NAS is the way to go. I use NAS plus external drive that backs up my entire NAS. For pics and videos it's super super convenient to have them backed up automatically. I don't trust my data on external drives only as I was very careful of handling my ext drive and even then it started clicking. Luckily I had my data on the NAS already by that time. Plus are you going to be very diligent on backing up the files to external drive yourself or would you rather just have it done automatically.

All of this depends on how important this files are. If it's just ripped or downloaded movies I could care less if lost. But family pics and videos are not something I'd take risk with and rather spend the money to protect them now than to pay shit load of money for data recovery services.

Thoughts about WD Red Plus vs Easystore shucking for Synology 920+ use? (be easy on me, just buying first NAS now)

WD Red Plus 6 TB x4 = $420. 18 TB usable space with SHR
Easystore 14 TB x2 = $400. 14 TB usable space with SHR, can add two more drives later

My current storage solution is external HDD and I have around 6 TB data altogether, mostly photos. Either option would give me plenty of expansion that should last years. I'm leaning towards the Red Plus route since it seems like it would be quieter?, plus the drives were meant for NAS use and somehow that makes me feel better

There are two issues with SMR drives in a raid array. The first is if you are doing heavy sustained transfers for extended periods of time, the transfer rates will drop.

The second issue is if (when) a drive fails the rebuild time for the array will be dramatically longer with an SMR drive. Array rebuilding time is when the array is at its most vulnerable, and an additional drive failure during a rebuild will usually result in data loss. It's up to you if the price difference is worth that risk.

Darn, the 8TB WD Red Plus are sold out apparently. I placed my order at 3:20AM and never received any confirmation. Just checked My Orders on B&H and it shows notify when available.
