USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 all mean 5 Gbps (~625 MB/s). Kind of a moot point since the mechanical disks themselves top out at ~125 MB/s (1 Gbps).

Easystore, Elements, Black and Passport portables all use the same underlying 2.5" SMR drives. Difference is mostly chassis and features.

Elements: absolute basic drives, pre-formatted NTFS iirc, Easystore is just the Best Buy branded version

Passport: has hardware encryption and password protection, pre-formatted NTFS

Passport Ultra: same as Passport but with USB-C connector instead of microUSB

WD_BLACK: basic drive in nice metal chassis, pre-formatted exFAT

I prefer the WD_BLACK line since those have better heat dissipation.

As for reliability, all drives can fail at any time. I've got a couple boxes of dead WD, Seagate, Hitachi and Toshiba at my office so I don't have any brand loyalty whatsoever. If data is important, you should have a backup (3-2-1 rule).
Never choose seagate over WD. Prone to failure, lower quality.

Good drive, but usually around $90 at Best Buy (and if you can hack with 15% recycling an old drive coupon), you are down to under $80.

Best Buy has these for the same price and you can use the 15% recycle coupon on them to reduce them further.

I was researching these a bit - from everything I gathered, there's no significant performance or quality difference between the WD and Seagate 5TB portable variants (although each brand has it supporters and detractors). The selling point for the "Black" external drive is packaging. I picked up the basic black Easystore at BB for $90.

What exactly would you have to recycle to get the 15% off? And how easy is it?
