This is good deal on a solid entry level burr grinder. Baratza has great support that helped me put a timer switch on my Encore like the Maestro Plus and Virtuoso have. Next upgrade is the M2 burr after my stock ones wear out.

It was a legit coupon and they didn't honor it.

Higher end grinders will have more consistency of grind size. Ideally, you want all grinds exactly the same size so they all extract evenly and you don't get over or under extracted grinds. Burr grinders are huge step up from blade grinders which bash the beans into random sized fragments.

What, Are you saying these do a shitting job at the espresso grind? And, what grinder would you recommend? I'll read up on it.

I've heard nothing but good things about this grinder. I thought it a little odd it was the Only ~$150 grinder people rave about. Because anything else around the $150 price or less is complete garbage for espresso, and close for coffee.

Please tell me what you know. I want to get an espresso maker soon.

The grinder is the most important tool for making good coffee/espresso because without a good grind you can get no further.
This used to be regular price and I remember avoiding it because it reportedly didn't do a great coarse grind. I wonder if it's better now,.

I already have a Hario skerton. Would I benefit a lot more from this grinder?
Only reason I would get this is if I were making larger batches of coffee. As it is, I only drink a cup a day and I'm the only consistent coffee drinker in the house. And on the rare occasions that I actually make more coffee, I just pull the drill out for the Hario haha.

The Bartaza might have a slight edge over the Skerton in terms of grind size accuracy but I don't think it's enough to justify upgrading if it's just you drinking coffee and you're not doing more than 1-2 cups. I like to keep my beans whole until I'm ready to drink.

May I ask why this unit is not for espresso ? What then would be your recommendations for espresso needs?

Thank you.
Realistically, you will not find anything in this price range that does a proper espresso grind. A high-end hand grinder gets you in the ballpark, but more likely in the $150-200 range.

Baratzza has an excellent youtube series on repair of their grinders. Parts are reasonable. The encore is the america's test kitchen pick of the burr grinders they reviewed.

However, when I go to the gear I was trying to replace I could not get the nut loose for love or money, so thanks original poster!

Not a bad grinder for pour over. Skip if you're planning for espresso grind sizes.

Yes, bought mine a few years ago at this price. Used almost every day since then for fairly coarse French press grind, 64 grams every morning. No complaints - would definitely recommend for med/coarse grind use. Even without a sieve, produces a great brew. If mine weren't still working flawlessly, I'd definitely rebuy at this price

The grinder is the most important tool for making good coffee/espresso because without a good grind you can get no further.

What about aeropress? I just got an espresso machine, but it made bad steam, leaked some, and made ok, but inconsistent espresso, so I took it back. The first thing I noticed when using it is it put out espresso with a profile noticably similar to what I get from my aeropress. Then I realized it's probably the grinder I use. I went out and bought some esspresso at a coffee shop so I could get a true espresso grind. When I put that in the espresso machine I got a different flavor and some crema. With my coffee grinder there was 0 or little crema. SO I think it might be important for me to get a grinder that can do a proper esspresso grind EVEN IF I AM USING THE AEROPRESS. I forgot to try the truely grinded espresso beans in aeropress. I'm pretty sure it will be better too. I think I'll go try that now

I just ordered this grinder. And I ordered it in white. I'm probably going to regret that too. It's just that I've seen it as black so many times I want a change, before even owning it.
This grinder, and even the Virtuoso, don't really provide a consistent grind at the finer settings, which is really what you need for espresso. For automatic grinders you'd probably want to start at the Sette level, which is a good bit more expensive, but that's the investment you need to make for consistent, good espresso. You could also go with manual hand grinders of which you can find some good ones for sub $200.

Great! I'm trying to buy it now as a backup to my Oxo Burr but Amazon Pay hanging on place order; I wonder if they're trying to eliminate coupon as we speak, heh!

Edit: just went through, almost unbelievable no tax to CA, fingers crossed

The two things you need from a grinder for espresso are a very fine grind, with very consistent ground size. The encore makes fairly consistent grounds, but the consistency drops the finer you set the machine (I use mine for French press). Also, even at the finest setting the output is still too coarse to be ideal for espresso. Probably the best automatic grinder you'll get for the job at $112, though

I've had this for a couple years and it's been fantastic.

About a month ago it wouldn't grind, it would just stop. Thought it was the end, but after taking it apart found the spout where the ground coffee falls through had clogged. Cleaned it out and back to normal. So moral of the story is use that brush to clean up in the spout.

Do you know the cheapest, most reliable grinder that will do on-point espresso grind?

And yes, I'm one of the fewer that understands the consistency of the grind size is just as important as the fineness of the grind. What I can't figure out is how to shop for a good grinder!

I'm currently using a Saeco Via Venezia, which has a pressurized portafilter. Am I correct in assuming that not being able to get a good consistent espresso grind with this grinder wouldn't be a major issue?

I have this Encore grinder already. I didn't do the upgrade tip to the burr the guy mentioned in another comment but the Encore is way inconsistent and doesn't get fine enough for espresso. This is great for my aeropress and pourovers which I make probably 70% of the time. If you really want to get into espresso then unfortunately there are no 'bang for the buck' items IMO. I started with low-midlevel equipment and have regretted it. I've replaced many items and spent too much but I really like the process and size of espresso shots. I still couldn't pull the trigger on a real electric grinder for espresso but I did purchase a manual 1zpress that does a great job. It has made me back off of espresso a bit though since my morning coffee process is already complicated enough and the extra grinding for my ladys shots makes me too lazy lol
