I've had a 3rd gen in my home for about 6 months and always loved it. I'd like another echo dot. Is the 4th gen worth the extra $10?

I would say no, unless you use it for music. I have about 5 of the 3rd gen and a couple of the 2nd gen and they are all great. I prefer the smaller size. I have most of mine connected to larger sound systems and so the speaker is disconnected. I do hope they offer digital audio output sometime. That would be awesome Smilie

Also, if you have the Amazon Prime credit card, you can get 10% back on the amount charged to it.

I like mine with the clock other than its color. I wish they had a black version with the clock. It's in my bedroom so no big deal it being a blue color but I'd much rather it be black like the ones without a clock.

Is the audio really a downgrade from the 3rd gen? Be using it strictly for that in the kitchen

I believe it's an upgrade not a downgrade.

When Amazon has the sales for the echo dots, always always keep looking through the listing of items when you search for 'echo Dot'.
Amazon has always had another separate deal that offers a freebie, like a Smart switch, or a smart RGB light bulb for the same price.
You almost never see it on the front page of Amazon or on the first page of search results, but if you do a little bit of digging, you should be able to find one of those offers. They often have a limit of one bundle per purchase but you can go back and make a whole other purchase to get another bundle.

I just did a quick search, and on the second page I found this. Echo dot 3rd gen with a free rgb smart light bulb. 💡

If you want a fourth gen, just search for echo dot 4G, etc and then scroll through the listings.

Good luck and enjoy your freebie! 👍

I'd say yes if it's your bathroom speaker or main smart device in your bedroom, if just for the clock alone. It's a lot more convenient than asking.

The 4th gen dot speakers are better than the 3rd gen dot speakers, but it isn't a huge difference. If you aren't setting them up in pairs to listen in stereo, you probably really wouldn't notice a difference. I have several 4th gen, but I still have no problem buying the 3rd gen.

At this price, you can either get two fourth gen, or three third gen for the same price. For me I was perfectly fine getting the third gen and some free bundled smart switches.

If it's a choice between getting one fourth gen and two third gen, definitely get the two third gen because you can set two of them up to play music in 🔊stereo🔊 in the Alexa app, and that would sound way better, even in a kitchen.

Edit: oh one last thought, if cost isn't that big of an issue, I would recommend getting a full size echo 4th gen. They look pretty much just the same as the 4th gen echo Dot, but they are about 50% larger. They have much better speakers and even a small dedicated transduced subwoofer. I don't have one myself, but from everything I've heard from those that do own one it sounds amazing, much better than the prior versions of the echo. It's on sale right now for 60 bucks.

Edit: I found another one with a bundle that will also give you an RGB light bulb with the fourth gen echo for the same price of $60. 😄

LoL - if you're not on your 5th echo, 3rd show, and 17th firestick you need to catch up 🤦 ♂️
oh, and wait until you try the Google hub ... and smartthings... when you hit Homeassistant you need AA. (assistant anonymous)

Actually, I think upgrade or downgrade would be up to each person's opinion. We have a third gen and like the standalone audio quality much better—the sound is more full with a better low-end (bass).

The 4th gen has good mids and highs but was really lacking a full sounding low-end…seems like Amazon is trying to sell you on their Echo Sub. After some time our 4th gen proved to be defective as it wouldn't remain connected to the network. Amazon wanted to send me a used one as a replacement, so we just got our money back instead. Still happy with our "punchy" 3rd gen =).

I ended up getting a 4th gen with clock and color bulb for $35. Only difference I could tell is that I only get 5% back on Amazon card vs 10% but I got a color bulb. I am excited for the clock. The best part will be it will let me know whether my echo has power or not. I put mine on a Kasa WiFi switch for privacy mode. "Alexa turn off echo" Works great.

If I want to play music, should I get one of these newer dots, or an Echo (gen 1 $19) or Echo plus (gen 1 $29) from Woot?

Or pay bit more for Echo gen 4 (~$40 used -very good)?

I would. We got these for our kids rooms just for that. One could get some Google assistant with screen, but we didn't want to introduce that into the bedroom (amplifying bedtime monkey business).
