What are the real downsides of just buying a cheap $270 HP Laptop from Target with a 4-Core i3-1125G4 chip and PCI4 and building a RAID-5 on Windows? Synology is much more expensive and its hardware is much less powerful on paper. What am I missing by saving hundreds of $$? Thanks!
P.S. I am sure this has been asked many times. But many people (like myself) are newcomers into RAID-5 storage and the answer will be very helpful.

Your best bet is now "parity". So you could still use your setup, but you want to run freenas or unraid(20% off today). In unraids case, it will scan all drives every 30 days for a "parity check" just incase one of the seldom used sectors takes a dump and you dont realize it.
Also got incorrect cash back (ordered last night), chatted with bot, waiting on reply from cs.
