On the other hand, the book has a 4.7/5 rating with over 2100 reviews
I believe most recommend reading it in release order. So between the 10th and 11th books it looks like. It can spoil some things from the earlier books. Like some tensions, some people's motivations, who's good, who's bad, etc. It's been a long time since I've read it but I can think of four characters you aren't too sure about in the beginning of the series that this book kind of removes the some of the mystery around them. But others have started with it and still enjoyed the series
Nah, and honestly, it's more rewarding to read after reading three or four books in the main series.

Too bad the new tv series is not really following the books very well. Then buying and reading the books would be a good idea. But seeing how they changed things, like Perin killing his wife, or the false Dragon coming so early and totally outside of the books, the way they SHOW the magic being done. Those things make reading the books a bad idea. Better to watch the low quality TV series first and then read the books. That way both will be more entertaining.

The TV series gives visuals, but you lose much of the character thoughts and building. The books are far more involved and detailed.

I personally prefer to read things in chronological order. So I read this first, but then again, this is my third time through the series.

That said, Robert Jordan does not really write the books in chronological order. He will start a passage out about someone doing something and then immediately go back a day or several and explain how they got to that point, which in my opinion destroys a large amount of opportunity to create suspense. If you already know that the characters are perfectly fine in the future, any obstacle put in front of them becomes a moot point.

I really like the characters and the setting and story, except the ending, which is absolutely pathetic. It would have been awesome if the PC game that was green lighted for it had ever been created. They had one where you played an Aes Sedai but it is abandoned ware and will not really run on modern PCs

OMG this series MUST DIE already. I started reading this series more than 30 years ago!!! The series was overdue for death by book 5 or 6, I quit after 8. I have no idea how many there are now. Heck, my 17yo son (that didn't exist until 14 years after I read the 1st book) and I are trying to watch the Amazon TV series, but even that's a struggle. It looks like they only got 10% of the budget (and acting talent) of GoT.
Haha, I just looked at my avatar after I posted and realized my son hadn't been born when I joined slickdeals either Smilie

I remember really enjoying this book because it helped me understand one of my favorite characters better.

With that said, the WoT series isn't really a friendly book to read. It goes beyond purple prose, where the writer describes the color of a wall for a whole chapter and nothing seems to happen - and this gets worse after each book, especially the 4th one. There used to be a joke on WoT fan forums where a gif summarizes each book in a single sentence since nothing happens.

Doesn't mean it's a bad series, I mean I spent my H.S and college days following the series. I am saying that the Amazon Prime original series may be easier to get into for a lot of people, and that's okay because this series really is worth exploring by any means!
I started reading WOT around 1998. I stopped at book 9. I think I got that far twice.

One of these days I will finish it as I've heard Sanderson did a good job. Unfortunately I will have to start at the beginning again

I did somehow made it all the way through Goodkind's Sword of truth series. It was a slog after awhile, just like WOT.

And Rothfuss and Martin can just piss off.

With you on that. Rothfuss went all GRRM but without the GRRM success. 2 books in 14 years? Just get Sanderson to finish this and GRRMs series (though I guess Weiss already did.... sort of, we could use a new ending though). They'll be done before XMAS.

I was a huge GRRM fan before the HBO series ended. I used to check his blog and ASOIAF subreddit every day for news of the next book. After so many years with no release, I've lost any excitement I once had. And then Covid hit, you would think the man would have had ample time during lock downs to finish the book... he never will.

Then the additional salt in the wound, if he ever did finish Winds of Winter, he still has at least 1 more book to go which will absolutely never be finished.

THEN to top it off, the man has a deathwish that if he passes before completing the series that no one ever be allowed to finish the series. So no chance Sanderson will be able to step in and conclude this one...
