Buy the bigger more expensive one. The reason: The end of the driveway snow plow mess. Most snowblowers can handle 8" of snow on your driveway easily. Where the less powerful ones fail is the big piles at the end of the driveway left by the town snowplows. Neighbor has a 5hp that I see him struggle with every 8" or more snow storm. The machine wants to ride up that mess rather than cut through it. He has to muscle the machine down and sometimes it still will ride up.

Other snow blower tips:

- Put fuel stabilizer (like Sta-bil) right in your gas can as soon as you buy gas and use it in all of your small engines, especially the snowblower. If gas is left in without stabilizer it will gum up the carburetor and you won't be able to start it when you need it. Sporadically used machines, especially snowblowers are prone to this. Just keep fuel stabilizer in the gas can and use that gas and you don't have to worry about it. Can keep the fuel stabilized gas, in the snowblower tank. I have electric start and never need it as mine always starts first or second pull. For at least 10 years.

- Spray all painted parts down with WD40 to keep it from rusting from towns salt mix at end of driveway

- Leave a one width pass on your driveway for last. After you do the towns end of driveway salty mix, that last width pass back to your garage will serve to clean the salt out

- Not a fan of plastic chutes. I would only buy it IF A replacement is readily available. The chute is hugely important. Without it the snowblower is useless. Worker at Lowe's told me his plastic chute broke ( not same machine but I believe it's inherent in plastic) after about 4 years use. I'd buy a spare chute and have it on hand.

- If you are tall ( probably 6' 2" or above) ….some machines have low, unadjustable handles. You will be muscling the machine around at the street when turning snowblower around. The low handles will cause you to have to bend to do this and the machines are heavy. Very easy to strain your back. Get one with tall enough handles so you won't have to bend.
Brought a few years back. Very disappointing.
Plastic chute is not a concern.. it's been standard for troybilt and many craftsman for years.
I will caution people if you don't know how to fix stuff like this yourself talk to the repair shop you use before buying one ..
I do that work for a living...while it looks like a Loncin engine, parts and parts information is usually non existent from companies like this.
It's made in China and sold at a very low price point by a big box store.
We get and turn away several "no idea who made it" mowers, generators, and snowblowers every year.

Got one from home depot a few weeks ago for $499. Seems decently built except for the plastic chute, which will likely eventually break. But the biggest downside is that the wheels don't turn independently. Makes it hard to maneuver. Either way, this will likely be impossible to get for $499 in a few weeks

Plastic shoots are very common to be plastic. They don't break from use
I have had a Craftsman for ~20 years that has a plastic chute. They absolutely break over time if you have heavy snow mixed with ice and then extreme cold on top of that. I know because as I was clearing the driveway, a chunk of ice exploded the chute and the ice narrowly missed my face. When I replaced the chute, I reinforced the inside with some aluminum flashing. To be fair, it did take ~8 years for the first chute to explode.

I wish you could buy metal replacement chutes but my frankenchute has been working fine for over a decade.

Just want to say the handle height comments are spot on. I had to get rid of an Ariens because it killed my back using it despite being only a 24" wide machine. My replacement is a huge Husqvarna, no back issues anymore.

Did anyone who got one have their order shipped yet? Mine is showing that the label was created on 11/30 but looks like Fedex still never got the package.

Same. They teased me. FedEx shipped from about 75 miles away and said it would be here yesterday. I cleared my afternoon to wait for it and they never showed. Today the FedEx date is "pending" and Walmart says 12/8. FU FedEx.

For starters - please when you are investing in a machine to do work in cold weather and remove snow, you want to have something that can be reliable. And for reliability get a product that has been known and has been in market producing the equipment for years.

Being a snow thrower and lawn equipment seller for about 5 years I have never heard of power start brand.

I used to sell craftsman and Husqvarna products. And many a times craftsman professional grades. But never heard of this brand.

And to assume you would be doing work outside and what happens if something goes wrong with this unknown branded product? I have had a craftsman for 11 years now - dual stage, 179 cc, 24 inch wide, 21 inch high, electric start, 6 speed front drive, 2 rear drive speeds, and a manual rotating shaft with plastic chute. Knock on the wood works ok so far.

My two cents.

On the truck. Arrives Tuesday. Hope yours is the same. I'm still salty for the teasing FedEx gave me the other day. Wasted an afternoon.

Yup just checked mine and it's showing Monday delivery for me. And as much as I hate Fedex with a passion and how much they boned me in the past I would say this sounds more like an issue with Walmart since Fedex didn't even get the item until 12/3.

Either way Walmart did give an initial ETA of 12/13 so it's still going to come in earlier than that and I'm not expecting any snow until then anyway. I'm just hoping it comes in one piece since Fedex tends to just yeet everything onto my porch.

I've had this model for 2.5 years and going into my 3rd season. Got it $420 from Amazon. It's been great. Wish the chute rotated greater than 180 deg. but I can cope.

Bought a magnetic oil drain plug for $10 to mop up metal particles. Added some offroading led lights for $20.

How about shear pins? Did this come with extra or were you able to get replacements?

What a nightmare. FOURTH delivery attempt failed. 10 days to go 75 miles. This time it says it was sent back for "inspection". No doubt they're questioning if it was damaged

If you bought it, check it over THOROUGHLY before you start assembly.

Similar issues for me. Delivery was supposed to be 12/6 however Fedex has been showing the deliver as pending and it's been stuck in Maryland since 12/4. Just got an email saying it's moving again and should be delivered tomorrow.

Denied AGAIN. This time it got sent back to the hub "for inspection". I'm going to look this thing over with a magnifying glass if it ever gets here. It's been five miles away for several days now.

Well got mine today, opened it up and it's damaged....

On the front at the bottom the metal on both sides are bent in. The left side is pretty bad and is pretty close to the auger and the right side is bent as well but not as bad. I checked my front camera and Fedex just backed into my driveway in a box truck and the guy had to just let it drop onto the bumper and slide it off. Don't blame the guy since it's heavy but Fedex needs to have a better way of getting these off the truck.

Going to talk to Walmart about it now, not really looking forward to try to ship this back since it's pretty heavy and I only have a small sedan. I can try to use some wood and a hammer to try to bend them back if they offer a partial refund but I don't have my hopes up.
