We use this. It's great to filter out swearing from things we watch with our kiddos. When you go through the filtering itself, each individual instance is seen in the filter with a quick description of what it is. So you can choose to filter out what you think is acceptable for the age of your children (e.g. leave in the nudity of a woman sitting/posing for art students while removing a sex scene, removing stronger curse words or racial slurs while leaving most of the others, or removing absolutely everything so that Pulp Fiction is now a 15 minute clip). I've also heard that they have a Jar Jar Binks filter so that you can watch the Prequel trilogy without him in it, but I cannot confirm that.

My only complaint with the service is that you cannot use captions when you filter. We have captions run on everything we watch, but that's not an option with VidAngel.
Imagine being triggered by a service that keeps others from being triggered.
Mah man, take this somewhere else. This has nothing to do with Chappelle--completely different demographics. This service is for those who want it.

I, for one, despise gratuitous nudity and sex scenes (i.e., soft porn) that add no value to the stuff I like to watch. Take Altered Carbon, for instance.

I don't have VidAngel, but I am grateful it exists.

It appears the CSV files are created using a separate program. is better a community or location that shares the ones they created?
Csvs are created using lossless-cut when markers are created (start-end point). I shared with few friends 1:1. If you want to create site I can upload few or pass it on.

There are many people who consider films a work of art and should remain the way the director intended them to be viewed. For those who liked the Passion of the Christ it would not of been near as powerful without the violence at the end, early Martin Scorsese films and Spike Lee films like Do the Right Thing would not of been near as realistic if all the language was filtered out. If I were a Director I would not want my films changed.

FYI - I did raise a daughter and although she's in her 20s now there were many films and shows I did not let her watch when she was younger
This isn't about censoring art. And even if it were, who cares? If a person wants to cover Mona Lisa's cleavage on their screen, it's a free country; not my problem.

Someone mentioned earlier that you can have VidAngel allow art nudity but skip sexual nudity.

I watched the new Baywatch movie not long ago. Did not need to see that dead guy's penis, in the morgue scene. Nothing sexual about the shot, but I don't see the art in it either. The director can claim all the artistic/creative freedom he wants, but still. Whether I manually skip the shot or have a service do it for me, same thing.

There is also a similar service called ClearPlay which sells a BluRay player (for filtering physical media) and offers filtering through streaming (similar to VidAngel) but you must use a Chrome browser (unlike VidAngel). ClearPlay has filters for many more movies (including all Disney owned studios…Disney themselves even used ClearPlay as an example of how filtering services should be) but their site and lack of an app feels very dated compared to VidAngel. VidAngel was part of a lawsuit with Disney (back when they had the crazy model of selling discs) and this is why they do not offer filter options for Disney owned properties. At this price though, definitely worth a trial considering how polished their site and app are.

Ages ago I was surprised to see vidangel wasn't behaving like pass through filter. It was its own IP address. Unlike vidangel, we can see that ip address belongs to actual provider and clear play code is doing pass through filter work. So it does look like vidangel is playing sort of recorded movie and applying filter there on. I am not sure if this technique from vidangel is still shady as rentals method which got them into hot waters with Disney.

That's the opposite of what I said. You...as in yourself...have the right to consume content however you please. If you want it sanitized by a smart filter, the MPAA ratings guide, or you want to plug your ears and cover your eyes when the naughty stuff happens...more power to you.

If you're trying to sanitize content for others, I've got bad news: it only works until it doesn't. It's better to empower others with the trust and responsibility to make smart choices now, because you can't filter their content forever.

Makes you wonder how the rest of us turned into well-adjusted members of society without growing up with content sanitization services.
I'm just going to chuckle at "how the rest of us turned into well-adjusted members of society". I guess that's not exactly how I would describe our culture or society today.

I'm not here to tell you how to parent your children. Different kids, morals, and environments require parents to pick strategies that they believe will work for their family. All I can say is that I am extremely pleased with my children and the decisions they are making as young adults away from home. Not once have I thought, "Man, I wish I introduced them to more gratuitous swearing, nudity, and violence." And they would tell you the same thing. They don't feel like they "missed out" and now that they are on their own they are making their own decisions and still choosing to avoid content like that.

Again, watch what you want to watch. I'm grateful for services like this that allow me to do the same.

I hear this argument a lot. Fair perspective, I get it, but I just don't buy it.

Look, I love Christopher Nolan. Pretty sure I've seen every one of his films since Batman Begins in the theater (usually multiple times). He has stated numerous times that his films are designed to be enjoyed in the theater. He would lose it if someone told him that they caught Interstellar on a noisy train, on their phone, over a few different trips into the city. While I agree with Nolan that his content is BEST watched on the big screen, I also fully support a person that wants to enjoy it on a 5" screen in a crowded train. It is their choice - even if the director would say otherwise.

An artist has every right to suggest and encourage people to enjoy their creation as they intended. But what I do with their recommendation is totally up to me as the purchaser of the content.

Finally, this whole argument really breaks down for movies that end up on TV. In many cases, you could leave all of the content in there and it would still be far less aligned to the artists' vision than if you edited it, simply because of commercials. Removing a few F-Bombs or some blood splatter is a minor intervention of the vision. Having a 3-minute commercial break every 12 minutes really breaks the flow of a movie. If directors really cared about preserving their art they would never, under any circumstance, allow their content to be shown on TV with commercials.

My two cents.

Did you turn out well-adjusted? Did your parents have access to smart filtering software? Case closed. This software is just a band-aid for parents who want to farm out yet another aspect of parenting to a piece of technology. If you can't trust them to watch age-appropriate content, the problem isn't the rest of society.

My parents absolutely were concerned with the content that was in the home. And yes, thanks for asking, I turned out well. Unfortunately, I can point to plenty of friends and family members that did not have those restrictions. And things didn't always work out as well.

Anyway, there is no point in debating further. You have clearly made up your mind. Sincerely wish you the best of luck if you are a parent or become a parent in your future.
