You're basically buying a server along with a pre-loaded, NAS-focused operating system. You could definitely put together a server with better hardware for less money, and set up UnRAID or FreeNAS yourself. I've done that in the past, but recently I switched to buying Synology. I can't speak for anyone else, but personally the extra cost is worth it to me because of:

convenience (it just works right out of the box)
smaller form factor (the NAS is barely bigger than the drives)
quieter
less power consumption

If you don't understand, then learn IT. This NAS may not for noobs like you.

I don't understand why people pay so much for something that holds hard drives. Don't you still have to manage it from a computer anyway?
It's not just an external hard drive, synology provides multiple RAID configurations, virtualization, surveillance, and a bunch of other features.

I've never seen the DS1821+ go on sale... it's pretty good deal since it's about $100 more for 2 more bays...

I have this. My only regret: it doesn't hardware-transcode.

don't forget AMEX offer $25 off $250, still debating. Already have 1 Synology and 5 QNAP NAS running, still debating....

Plus I guess you also want to buy 6 of 14TB or 16TB drives... which will be another 2k.
