Glass top version is good for people who use on stove top, without it being a slow cook. Soups that start with sauting veggies, for example.
Cast iron top version is good for use in oven, and slow cooks. Better for a slow cook on stove, for example, a slow cook roast on stove top.
It's very handy for checking up on a simmer (e.g. not under or about to boil over) without having to actually do anything, and to check the color of something quickly and often without fuss.
It depends on what you want to do with it (e.g. in the oven it's no help), but for many things a glass lid is preferable.

Just FYI on the Matte black: Its basically just the interior coat without an outer coat. I got one last year with the brass knob, but this time it basically just looks like less work with the same lid.

Glass lid doesn't bother me - I use my enabled cast iron uncovered plenty often. (And I'm not sold that when I do use the lid, that the self basting ridges actually do anything that will make a noticeable difference. Guess I'll find out.)
Edit: found it, just had to search site.
