Sur La Table has the Staub Cast Iron Cocotte with Glass Lid for $100 with free shipping. Better than the previous $130 front page deal. Deal ends on Monday.

Edit: Zwilling also has it for the same price:

I'm not bullish on the glass lid. It doesn't contain the self basting spikes.
The Answer:

Glass top version is good for people who use on stove top, without it being a slow cook. Soups that start with sauting veggies, for example.

Cast iron top version is good for use in oven, and slow cooks. Better for a slow cook on stove, for example, a slow cook roast on stove top.
I haven't used a cast iron with a glass lid, and I haven't seen a Staub glass lid in person, but I often use glass lids on pots for the stovetop and really like it.

It's very handy for checking up on a simmer (e.g. not under or about to boil over) without having to actually do anything, and to check the color of something quickly and often without fuss.

It depends on what you want to do with it (e.g. in the oven it's no help), but for many things a glass lid is preferable.

Thanks for the comment. Was sort of tempted at first but realized glass lid wouldn't be preferable and past deals with cast iron lids show up as $100. My small apartment kitchen would appreciate that I wait too.laugh out loud

Out of all my dutch ovens I probably use my 4qt staub the most. Doesn't help that 2 of them are ovals and i don't use em.

Just FYI on the Matte black: Its basically just the interior coat without an outer coat. I got one last year with the brass knob, but this time it basically just looks like less work with the same lid.

Concur. I was surprised to see the difference those spikes actually make.

Almost as good as the BF deal through Verishop. $109 plus 20% CB. Came out to about $93 after CA tax.

Glass top means you are only getting 2/3rds of a cocotte. Without all the parts why not just use a sauté pan?

Why we use dutch oven or cast iron pans when Cepahalon do the job? Sorry for my ignorance. Whats the hype though? My cast iron pans are so heavy I dont use them due to weight.

I ordered earlier in the week when they had the $129 sale, hoping they do the right thing and price adjust.

Glass lid doesn't bother me - I use my enabled cast iron uncovered plenty often. (And I'm not sold that when I do use the lid, that the self basting ridges actually do anything that will make a noticeable difference. Guess I'll find out.)
