This will not work for unlocking. Using the pre-loaded Tracfone SIM intended for BYOD devices will not unlock a Tracfone-branded (or Simple-Mobile branded) phone. The service will work fine, but not the unlocking.

It doesn't work that way... Which network the MVNO is using have nothing to do with whether the phone is usable on another MVNO. This phone won't work with Mint Mobile until it is unlocked either after 12 months of service or using things like Rsim.

Btw, Simple mobile phones do work on Tracfone, Total Wireless, Net10, etc because they are owned by the same company.

Didn't work for me. Tracfone says the phone is not eligible for unlocking because I didn't add one-year of service instead using a pre-loaded sim
Exactly what experienced users keep telling people, the cheap BYOP preloaded sims don't qualify for unlock. Thanks for confirming.

It worked for me because I did not turn on the phone until Tracfone sim was inserted.

You can always get a Rsim for about $10-15 at eBay
I have this Total Wireless phone still factory sealed, never opened it since I bought it. So if I put my Tracfone sim in it prior to turning it for the first time, will it essentially get rebranded to Tracfone upon first boot and Tracfone will be able to unlock it?

This IS what I experienced BUT with an iPhone 8 Plus, an older model

That being said, only 25% of SD users confirm that Tracfone will unlock this way. The other 75% of users advise against this merhod

Because newer models might not be so lenient, I think you should consider siring an Rsim for a soft unlock. Those cost 10-15 bucks and a user recommends the below eBay listing. Just copy and paste on eBay and a seller' listing should come

No, activate as a TF using original sim that came with phone & choose keep current number so IMEI gets registered correctly - I activated TW 8+ iphone as a TF and after 12 months got it unlocked in Sept.
I also have activated a TW iPhone XR & ST 12 Mini as Tracfones & they do show as locked TF on my account so after adding & using the 12 months of service should also be unlocked.

However I need to add a YMMV - since Verizon has just bought TF companies & no one knows how it will affect unlocking - or anything else - there's no way to know if this will still work next year.

Mine is the first gen iPhone SE, not a very expensive phone these days.

Not sure I follow. How can I activate it as a TF considering that the phone is TW locked and the sim card that came with it is also TW?

I do have a working TF sim card tho, which I currently use in an unlocked phone and can use for experiments with the TW phone.

My post is for the simple mobile iphone.

Tracfone offers Sims that are compatible with the 3 main carriers: ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile

According to Google the SM Cellphones are T-Mobile compatible, BUT it is best to check the IMEI to make sure.

Then you simply put in Tracfone sim that is compatible with the same carrier as your cellphone.

DO NOT insert any other sim before turning on the cellphone. Simply insert the TF sim before you turn in on for the 1st time and it will then link itself to TF. But after doing this you can simply switch Sims whenever you need to.

let me know if you have any more questions

That's the best way to soft unlock, and the Rsim is only $5 w/ FS

Type the listing num. below on eBay for a reliable Rsim listing:

Maybe it's activating TW sim directly on TF account. This post [howardforums.com] from HowardForum used Straight Talk sim, but similar concept.

Got my phone and rsim today. Ebay instructions for rsim is not very clear. I turned on phone without rsim first and logged in with apple id. Then inserted rsim but complained about sim not supported. I waited for the code prompt a few seconds later and I entered the right code. It prompted several times. It unlocked the phone eventually. So now i have the phone with no sim restrictions.

Good Luck.

thanks for sharing, can you post a link to what rsim you bought?

I just got my phone yesterday, but I planned on using the sim for tracfone, which I understand from this thread should work. I am just curious about the rsim thing too.

thanks
