I actually do both! When I read a book that I really like on KU, I'll wait and give the author time to collect the royalties from that month's check out, and then the next month or so I'll buy their book with my Amazon digital credits. Maximum support.

I read a lot of books through KU. I mean A LOT. This helps me filter through books that look okay on the store page but end up turning out to be garbage without having to make any substantial monetary investment. The books and authors that I DO find I like can then get their KU royalties, and then a little bit later down the line I can further support their work while also getting a copy for myself.

I wish I had started doing this earlier, as I unfortunately found that a several of the indie authors that I really enjoyed reading eventually had their stories pulled from checkout/sale on Amazon after the agreed term expired. In many cases after the author passed away, leaving no legal way to obtain a copy from a retailer. One of the more memorable authors would have been Brent Roth, writer of the dragon's wrath series. https://www.reddit.com/r/litrpg/c..._continue/
He posted regular updates on his website and started putting out chapters for his fourth book in the series. The first chapter was a couple days late, the second chapter was 2 weeks late, and then he was never heard from again. Unfortunately because the author was very private and writing under a pen name, no one ever found out what happened to him. After a while his first and then second books were taken down on the anniversary of the date that they were originally published, likely because he was not present to renew the agreement with Amazon. šŸ˜ž

Amazon/ku loses a pretty significant amount of money to royalties for the number book that I read on the platform in any given year. šŸ˜…

Here is the simple/direct URL to the Amazon KU promotion. I dislike having to login from a long referral link.

Edit: oh, also, be sure to check the rewards/offers on your credit card before you sign up for this. Chase, for example, had a 20% back up to $6 when you activate the offer and buy a Kindle unlimited subscription. $6 is $6. šŸ‘

If you're wondering what resources are available for free, check out the info in my post from another thread for some of the best sources.

If you have Amazon prime only you should also have access to a (much smaller) selection of Kindle books without any additional charge.
For those looking for a 6 month subscription, this deal is even better. Though I can't say for certain if the price is offered to everyone, I'm showing $30.

I have to interject a little common sense here. Authors put their books on K U because they find it financially advantageous and remove them when it isn't.

it's forcing me into a gift subscription, not letting me extend my current sub like it has in the past.

Can we use a gift sub for ourselves?

Yes. Buy the gift subscription then use the gift code that's emailed to you on your own account.

Thank you. I read alot and previously I bought the 6 month sub for 29. I bought two years worth and still have until June 2022. Going to buy a two year sub since I doubt it will get any cheaper.

k u is so skeezy. mostly just stolen work from other authors with bonus typos and bad grammar.
It's also terrible for authors, most of whom basically just scrape by on what they earn from their books anyway. If you read a lot and want to support authors, consider that before you subscribe (also, leave reviews for books you love. It helps authors SO much).

For those concerned about authors... I pay for the books by authors I really love instead of just checking them out because 1)It's giving more support for authors I love and 2) if I ever stop kindle unlimited I still have access to those books.

I used to have kindle unlimited, but switched to Hoopla. It has everything I need and it's free.

If someone is looking for a new 6.8" Paperwhile, when browsing them on my Amazon Prime account, I see this offer: "As a Kindle Unlimited member, you get 25% off by choosing 5 monthly payments.' https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...0DER&psc=1
That would put the PW at $105.
