256 is definitely small, but think of it this way, it's a desktop. You aren't going to move it a lot (in most cases). Mine is 16gb with 256ssd, and I have it hooked up to a 7200rpm 3TB external harddrive which I run dropbox off of. It hasn't had any issues. The only time I think you really need a huge SSD in the mac mini is if you're editing/exporting 6k footage or something intense like that.

If you really want, you can hook up a fast external SSD via thunderbolt/usb c.

Depends on the usage. For the average person surfing, checking emails, streaming videos etc., 8GB is fine for the Mac Mini M1.

The majority of people are not heavy users.

How would this work for a video camera monitoring solution (5-7 cams)?

Second link should say 512GB, not 256GB.

Purchased it a week ago for $599 - will Costco price match? Can I just call them?

try that, but honestly, you can just return and rebuy lol. My wife always buys a bunch of stuff, then when it goes on sale, she's said its easier for her to go in, do a return then rebuy. Having them price adjust depends on who you've got on the phone/return area.

I bought one also 2 weeks ago for $599.

I bought mine in the warehouse, not online, so I'm just going to go to the warehouse in a few days, show my receipt and get the price match.

8gb of ram is pathetic and you're selling yourself short not getting at least 16gb for the long run

I agree, I think with swap memory it can compensate too. I think there is a camp of users who tell themselves theyre going to keep their computer for the long run (5 years +). I've started thinking of computers more like my phone and that they are something I'm going to be replacing more frequently (2-3 years). In 2-3 years, the tech is going to be so much better, I'd feel bad holding onto a 3 year old M1 that I through extra money at just to get 16gb of ram or a bigger SSD.

I agree. The M1 with 8 GB is pretty cheap, and if somebody is not a heavy user, then it makes no sense to pay the premium to get 16 GB, just to "future proof" it. I'm going to be future proofed by just buying a brand new machine in a few years time.

I have a feeling that some people who say 8 GB is not enough for an M1 Mac have never actually owned or used one.
