I'm also surprised the bashers armchair bike experts aren't arguing with each other already.

In short, I like this deal a lot. If this size and style bike is right for you, it is a good one to get into the E-bike world.

Observations:

I know nothing about TurboAnt. I think all these E-mobility companies are young startups, so it is difficult to track their quality records...but....

From the photos, this bike appears to be as vanilla/generic as can be. This is a good thing because it means everything can be replaced/upgraded/repaired by a general experienced bike guy or bike shop. In comparison, many other E-bikes will have batteries that fit only that particular frame, or the crank is custom, etc.

The battery capacity is pretty good. You should be able to go almost 30 miles with throttle alone. (standard exception: you only ride up hills, ride in sand, or is really heavy)

Opinion:

I think if you are in the 90% percentile in size, and are in the market for a simple E-bike, and doesn't need flash/bling, this is a better deal than to try to convert a used bike with a kit+battery.

I think this deal is very comparable with the recent $400 Walmart E-bike deal. In that deal, the negative points are: physical fitment, lower power, and questionable Walmart assembly quality. The positive point is the price and the nice feeling knowing that if you don't like it, just drop it off at the local Walmart store.
Not if you're riding sober
Depending on your state, you can get a DUI for riding a normal bike drunk.

The battery is what presents the biggest hazard.
At a minimum the company should identify what brand of 18650 cells it uses.
The more battery specs the better
I emailed the company and received this:

"We would like to share with you that the brand of the motor is Xiongfeng and the brand of the battery is Lishen, which is also a certified brand."

someone will have to explain to me the appeal to ebikes someday.. I have a road bike and tri bike and I don't get e-bikes at all.. unless of course you're one of those guys with like 100 bikes and just want a new variation for the hell of it.

At the $700 price point there wasn't anything I saw that was worth a second look. The closest competitor was the Woot deal from last week. But for the net difference, with sales tax at Woot and no sales tax at TurboAnt, the Ranger R1 was an easy choice. Only time will tell if I made the right choice.

I do think the new SlickDeals today for the TurboAnt fat tire model for $999 is worth a look. It has many features I like that are absent on the Ranger. But as a first eBike, I am very comfortable with my current choice.
I got one from woot last week, not sure if I should cancel my order on that one and get this one instead ?

I've seen some people drive them to work or around town... It may be street legal without insurance, while something like a motorcycle would require insurance etc. I guess it's more about that sort of thing. Can't really justify it in the Midwest personally though, since we have long winters... Not to mention people texting and driving

If I crashed it into an electric fence... will it also charge my bike?
Did an existing or newly created body orifice get penetrated by either the bike or the fence? Are you connected to both the fence and the bike?

Even a top Cat 1 rider would understand the utility of an e-bike. What are you really asking?

Do you like locking up your $3k tri-bike at the grocery store?

I think it's my area then.. more of an urban thing. I don't see anyone using e-bikes anywhere.

I do know people that own them, but only because they're bicycle enthusiasts. I suppose it makes sense in terms of traffic congested areas where it takes substantial time just to move a couple miles.

Ebikes are all over my urban area, but I also see more in the suburbs (places I can reach easily now that we have e-bikes)

Very often they are faster to get somewhere than by car.

They are certainly easier to find parking for than a car.

You can ride an ebike on dedicated bike paths where cars can't go. You can still ride them on all the roads too (sans interstates).

You don't have to be a regular bike rider to go 30+ miles easily.

You can choose not to sweat on a hot day.

You can carry more cargo without getting slowed down.

The utility of an ebike is nearly endless.

My wife is not a regular rider (and doesn't want to be) but can now keep up with me on my regular bike on steeper hills without feeling like throwing up. Her words exactly: Its a game changer

I assume you can quickly engage/disengage motor completely (No assist) to extend mileage? Anyone ever ride a 50lb regular bike?

All ebikes can be switched 'off''.

Basically you end up with a heavy regular bike and a little bit of drag on the drivetrain.

I often ride mine turned off on mild uphills, flats, and downhill. My bike weighs about 52#

My battery would provide 50-60mi for a person constantly in eco or tour mode. The way I ride it should yield me over 100mi range. Admittedly, I've not actually taken it to 100 yet...maybe 60....with significant juice left.

The faster one rides, the more wind resistance though. If you end up using assist to keep you going 20+mph, your range will dump under its rating.

If anybody wants to gamble, Biden's Build Back Better plan has a 30% r $900 tax credit for e-bikes. If that is not stonewalled, we may see a TON of great quality $2,700 ebikes to take full advantage of the tax credit.
