Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.

Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

I have Apple TV 4K (2017) and Shield TV (2019). Both have their strengths. I love tvOS over Android. Plex is a crap shoot on Shield where as my Apple TV never fails. But Shield allows full bitstream lossless audio output so when I want to play a movie full blast, I'll choose Shield. If I HAD to pick one over the other, I'd go Apple for reliability and ease of interface. Plus, Google has the potential to put ads on the Shield front page.

Edit: forgot to add, apple had 64Gb + $50 GC for $200 last week. I know… time machine… but for perspective, that was technically the better deal.
