Isn't this normally $179?
Having used Roku, FireTV and Chromecast, Apple TV is far and away superior. It's the difference between an iPad and a Fire tablet. Sure, the fire tablet is nice for 1/5 the price, but it's slow, jittery, packed with junk, etc.

Personally I think the last gen 4k is the sweet spot except the touchpad remote is a little wonky for most.
Harsh critics! It's a good price if you need an Apple TV today. Also, the Costco backing with warranty and customer satisfaction are an extra plus.

Find me an Amazon Firestick from 2017 that is smooth.

Yet Apple TV 4K 1st gen runs circles around the newest Firestick 4K - which I have tried along with the Google Chromecast with Android TV which is as fast as the newest Firestick 4K - people compared benchmarks.

Both devices were painfully slow.

If you dont mind a super slow device that is riddled with ads all power to you - i stream tons of content and subscribe to multiple streaming services so an extra $100 is well worth the cost of admission esp considering i will get at least 4-5 years of use from that device.
Well I'm not going to look for a 2017 Fire stick HD when you can buy a current 4K fire stick max for $35... Why would I do that and what would be the point to go back in time when considering a purchase today? I have 4 of the 2018 4k sticks though and the 1st gen Apple TV, when you say the Apple TV runs circles around it, I will admit the menu is smoother, but the loading time of apps is not noticeably faster than my fire sticks. The functionality within the the majority of the apps are no different, other than the Apple TV app allowing me to play iTunes extras and Apple specific apps which is why I bought it for $80 a couple months back on Walmart.com. I think it's a good price at $80 and should be the standard price considering you still have to subscribe to Apple TV and they could make their money back that way. A lot of companies sell product at a loss but make up for it in subscription or app/game sales. The newer 4K fire stick max (2021) model is even faster than my 2018 4k stick model for only $35. It's like 40% more powerful than 2018 model and I don't think there was a 4K stick before 2018. Apple is just overpriced if you're looking for a video/music streaming device, that's really all there is to it. Maybe it excels in Apple Arcade and that's the major draw for purchasing a mini game console at $150-180, I'm not sure, haven't done Apple Arcade yet. But Amazon has Luna which works on the $35 stick and is similar in function to Stadia and Xbox Cloud Gaming, doesn't require any local hardware video processing beyond streaming HD/4K video.

Complaining about the remote is not going to fix the issue. Use your iDevices to control your AppleTV or buy the new remote.
If you want to keep talking about other streaming devices because it's cheaper and/or better because of x. Move on as this deal isn't for you.
It works for majority of people and the device gets updated frequently. It is considered a first class device considering a toddler and an older person can use the UI. At the end of the day, people want things to work and not have to tinker with it.

I just got mine yesterday from apple , I got the cyber Monday deal where I bought 2 $100 apple gift cards from target and got back $30 target gc + $50 apple gc. I like it a lot so far extremely easy to set up, integrates seamlessly with the iPhone, the is the second best deal I have seen on this device. Used on eBay they are going for at least $145

Every Apple TV 4K 2021 thread people come in here with the following responses:

- $150-160 - you are paying that for a streaming device hahahah!

- My Roku/Firestick/Google Chromecast is just as good - no reason to get this

- Just bought the 1st gen for $100 this isnt worth the extra $50-60!!

When will people understand that you get what you pay for. The Roku/Firestick/Chromecast are not even in the same stratosphere as the Apple TV is terms of speed / streaming quality - it's no contest. If you only stream a few hours a week or dont care about using a laggy, unreliable device stick with the aforementioned devices then stick with those devices

Only device that comes close is the Nvidia Shield Pro and that is nearly the same price (or higher) and has ads and other unsightly UI elements not to mention is not as user friendly as the Apple TV. If you need superior Plex or app side loading get the Shield, everyone else get the Apple TV 4K.

As for those who are saying if the 2nd generation is an upgrade over the 1st. Apple charges $60 for just the remote - this is a $50 difference over the sale price of the 1st gen ($100).

You also get a decently faster browsing experience and here is the important thing - for people with OLED TVs the 2nd generation is the only way to go - helps mitigate the 1st gen's issues with lightened blacks and screen flickering. If you have an OLED this is the only model of Apple TV you should buy.

For 99% of consumers out there, this is the best streaming device bar none. So stop hating because it's an Apple device and actually try it out. If you can sit there and say that using the Apple TV is no different than using a Firestick or a Roku device than you are either blind or blissfully ignorant of the massive speed/UI improvements.

Enjoy
I was not going to upgrade until I read your comment about the screen flickering/darkening and lightening on an OLED TV. I have one connected to my LG OLED TV and this is the only thing I have noticed that was a bit disappointing. I never use the actual remote so that wasn't an issue for me because I'm perfectly happy using the Remote control center widget on my iPhone. I'll give this new one a shot.

Out of stock at Amazon. Was on the fence about buying it (already have Shield TV Pro 2019, CCwGTV, etc.). Might hold off till another (hopefully better) deal.

UPDATE: Back at normal price on Amazon.

Does Best Buy price match with Costco ?
Just an update.. I was able to price match it at best buy. I was also not sure if they do it via chat but they did. Earlier I did at the best buy store.

I'm using an xbox series X to stream through a denon reciever to a 4k projector (HDR compatible) on a 120 in screen. The series X seems to have a lot of issues with communicating (cables are good, receiver is the new one from costco)...takes a long time to figure out the resolution/HDR goes blank, and sometimes interjects static- Is this a lot better than the series X? not a fan of apple products (but do like Atv+)...was going to go with the new 4k fire, but the audio always seems bad going through the denon vs the xbox on fire sticks, have to turn it up super loud

There is nothing wrong with sharing your personal experience and helping others to make a better decision. With all love to Apple TV ( own two units ), these things can be overkill for most people. So why not suggest to go with Fire TV Max instead or maybe something like Roku? I didn't get your logic, tbh. It's SD and users are free to share their opinions.

Apple TV or any other streaming platform, they all require a tinkering to some extent. None of them are perfect and require a little bit of technical knowledge to get all video formats to work.

Fanboy perspective for sure. My Fire TV Max disagrees with you. Before you say it, I do own two Apple TV 4Ks and two iPhone 13s in my household. Apple's TV market share also disagrees with your 99% number projection. What I don't understand is your fetish with UI speed and animations. None of them is relevant when you are watching Prime or Netflix. At least Apple could have added HDR10 Plus support since Prime has big catalog of movies and shows in this format. Apple is doing Apple things.

Apple will be happy to charge you another $200 when they announce a new and improved Apple 4K Max with AV1 support. The lack of AV1 support proves one more time that Apple only cares about profits.

BTW, if you care about power and want to use your streaming device for weather calculations/modeling and rocket science, there is Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen, which is very comparable to Nvidia Shield in terms of raw performance. And the cost is around $80 as of now. Again, being a fanboy and loyal to certain brands makes you blind. Good luck!

Enjoy your ads and painfully slow navigation / subpar picture quality

The entire industry, both written and Youtube reviewers agree, the top two devices are the NVidia Shield and the Apple TV 4K 2021.

With this deal the Shield Pro is roughly $40-50 more than the Apple TV 4K.

Typical Apple hater - I wonder why the marketshare of the streaming segment is 99% full of $20-30 devices lol.

You enjoy your Ford, I'll enjoy my Mercedes. No harm in either

Each device has its own benefits. I'd look more at the content you consume. Apple prioritizes the best streaming quality for their own services on their devices. Amazon does the same. The external apps like HBO and Netflix are pretty much a wash. Though I agree Fire TVs have much more ads, but ads aren't always bad. I've certainly discovered interesting streaming content through Amazon's ads.
