I wouldn't buy an Intel MacBook even if it was lower, just not worth it with the M1s.
right? makes no sense

You can get window key from eBay for like $3-$4…. That's the freest you can get it
This shouldn't be thumbs downed. I've done this multiple times and they're all legit.

My parents are asking for a new MacBook, they are using a 2012 MacBook Pro. They are pretty basic people. Just want to be able to video chat and play videos. Nothing heavy duty. With that in mind, this is a perfectly capable laptop right? Tech won't be too old for those things they want to do for years to come?

Just get office 365 and it comes with windows 10. There's deals on here for that all the time. Like around $50-$70 a year subscription. Not free but a good value
No, Office 365 does not come with Windows 10 unless you are an Enterprise customer and pay for one of their very expensive Enterprise plans.

Would an iPad be a cheaper option for such low-power usage?

This is only a decent deal if storage is a priority in a laptop

If you need SSD and don't want to break the bank this is the only decent way for 1/2 a TB of ssd; at the very least you get a 2.5k screen but battery is abysmal versus m1

If you can charge it often then it's a nonissue
Keyboard is improved magic keyboard

Main take away is if you have all the usbc to cope with it other wise m1 has more ports and justifies the price

It would, but a typical user would need to buy an external keyboard with trackpad to have a similar experience.

I suggest a current Macbook Air.

Why not just buy a Wintel laptop?
You could. You get Apple quality and a better binned i5 with the Mac. And the ability to run both OSes is nice. Sometimes I miss my Mac but like the ability to run Windows too.
