For anyone wondering, the Kids edition is the same hardware as the non-Kids edition but has the added extras of a 2-year warranty and cover.

The price just dropped by $40 and the delivery date just went from January 30th to December 24 - 30. Did they just find an extra container-full or something?

Is the software on the kids version intrusive in the sense that it indicates it's the kids version? Or is it just ad-free with the 2-year warranty and everything else is the same as the normal paperwhite?

These all come with Kids+ instead of Freetime, now. It looks like you only get a year from your most recent eligible device activation. Activating a Kids+ looks to cancel existing Freetime and possibly give a partial refund. Activating a new Kids+ does not give any sort of refund if you already have Kids+. Basically, they aren't letting you stack years of membership with new devices. Looks like a move to get more people actually paying for the service instead of banking the free years.
