If you are near microcenter, this is a better deal than BB's $450 deal because 8GB DDR ram cost about $30. For many ppl, 8GB ram should be good for now. later, you can easily swap out 4GB stick with a 8GB ram.

FWIW, Someone in the Microcenter reviews section said he added a 16GB stick without issue and had 20GB in the laptop.

manufacturer says 12gb is max, if he added a 16gb stick (for a total of 20gb).. do the extra 8 gigs really help? or do they go to waste? New to computers so I wanted to know how that works.

Will you notice an 8GB upgrade? Depends on how you use it. I doubt a new user will, though it will probably help in the future. It also isn't unusual for RAM sticks that are higher capacity than specced to work because it can mean that such sticks weren't available for testing when the laptop was in development.
