OnePlus is a nightmare to deal with. Worst customer support I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Wasted countless hours dealing with support over literally 2 months, had to send my phone in twice and lost a $20 Dbrand skin in the process. Issue was never actually resolved, and they refused to replace the phone. They'll forever be on my shit list now.
Thanks to itxjustin for the steps to make the phone SIM-free (unlocked to use on other carriers).

1. Turned the phone on without sim
---- Connect to WIFI --
2. Went to Settings, Connections
3. Select Network Unlock
4. Select Permanent Unlock
5. Done
6. Update to Android 11
7. Check with a non-TMO SIM to see if you can make and receive calls.
I had this phone for almost a year and a half. It was great at first but now it gives a "not responding" message every so often. Also gets a lot hotter than it used to.... I bought it for $400 awhile ago so I'm not complaining. I love the hypercharge feature, every phone should have it.

I think it's still a good phone for $250 but just know there are issues with it.

Bought this phone (for T-Mobile) when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago. Before opening the box, I checked the compatibility with Cricket Wireless using the IMEI showing outside the box. It was compatible. It was very easy to be unlocked following the steps provided by this forum and a message of "unlock is approved" showed up on the screen during the unlocking process. I have used the phone on Cricket Wireless for a few days and haven't encounter any issues with the carrier.

The only problem though is that I found the battery drains much faster than I expected. The battery was 100% upon arrival. I finished settings and 81% battery was left. Then I shut down the phone overnight and only 40% battery left next morning when it was turned on. In the next few days, I turned on the battery saver, adjusted 90-Hz refresh rate to 60-Hz refresh rate, and turned off bluetooth and location, the battery only lasted two days with average of about 2 hours of usage daily (mostly checking webpages and watching one or two very short videos). Does anyone have similar experience on the battery of this phone? Is the battery normal? Not sure if I should return it. Thanks.

Try getting the accubattery app from the playstire it's free and it will tell you what apps are using the most power. Maybe you have something that's running in the background that's eati up your battery. The other thing I've heard is some people have factory reset the phone Ake sure you have backup enabled before you factory reset )and that seemed to help.

Here's a brand new $250 phone, but it's locked to Boost. Slightly larger battery and flat screen but Slower charging and a snapdragon 765 instead of the 865.

This Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was on sale for $249 on black Friday at Walmart.com but I passed on it because it's locked to straight talk.

I have always found that android phones take a while to "settle" into a groove. The first week or two, since it is new, is doing all sorts of background tasks. Then with usage, it figures out your routine and settles down. Does that makes sense? Anyways, that is just my 2 cents.

If you have Sprint, do you have to unlock this phone, or can you use the included SIM card on T-Mobile?

wifey bought this phone for same price 2 weeks ago. phone got delivered in a week's time. glad was not put on backlog and there was no wait time.
wife's plan is metro pcs which is tmobile btw.
after unlocking the phone, and updates, i put the metro pcs sim card into the new phone, it did not work.
took to tmobile store , they could not get it working,
after tmobile acquiring metropc there are fewer stores in the area.
metropcs got the sim working on this new phone after several tries. they charged $22 for their effort.

wifey likes the phone as she switched from 5 year old Samsung phone. 😊

Pixel 3 is pretty old now. Compare the specs. No comparison. What other phone can you get now for $250 with these specs?

Specs don't tell the story. Pixel 3 works great, has a good camera (probably comparable to OnePlus 8), and gets free "good quality" uploads to Google Photos (which OnePlus does not).

The OnePlus does get you 5G. That's the only real compelling reason to consider.

I have Sprint and unlocked mine before. Not sure whether I had to or not, but only takes a minute so I would do it regardless.

The bigger issue is that if trying to activate it on Sprint you will get a message that the device isn't compatible with Sprint. You will need to get it whitelisted 1st. SD user hodaddy referred me to a user on reddit revik2 who can help you out getting it whitelisted. Just PM him on reddit and he will ask for your IMEI. He was super helpful and responsive and my phone was able to register on Sprint with his help.

I was really hoping with T-Mobile taking over Sprint that whole whitelisting nonsense was going to finally be over. I guess it will never end.

That's your opinion and that's fine. Just a quick question if you don't mind. If specs don't matter then why are they the first thing the companies talk about?

I guess you would be ok with buying a New SAMSUNG or IPHONE with less specs than last year's model and pay the same or more

Companies promote specs so they can sell endless "upgrades" to people like you, who buy into that.

Some upgrades are truly significant. Some are relatively irrelevant to the end-user experience. Most of the spec differences between the two phones being discussed are of the latter type.

Like I said are you willing to pay the same for a phone that has less specs then it did 2 years ago? You don't think companies would like to make even more money on phones with cheaper parts?

Those are the facts. It's true nobi NEEDS them but will people pay more money for less? Would you?

BTW. You didn't answer my question

I am not sure what you're going on about. The guy asked if it was worth upgrading a Pixel 3 XL to this. I said no, the Pixel 3 XL, from a use perspective, is at least as good overall (except for no 5G). You then go on some tangent about new phones need higher specs. Which is irrelevant to the guy's question.

If I were running a phone company, I'd introduce new specs every iteration, just like all of them do. Because you want to be able to assert your new model is better. It doesn't mean the new model is actually better in any way that matters.

This. Worst customer support experience I've ever had. I eventually engaged PayPal to get my money back after spending weeks playing nice.
