I've been hunting for a decent 3070-based laptop deal, and came across this. Start with this [hp.com] base config, then choose the 5800H + 3070 CPU/GPU combo, add the QHD screen, upgrade the keyboard to RGB (it will force you to do this), and upgrade RAM to 16GB (optional, but $60 seems reasonable to me). Apply code WINTER10. You could also save another $40 bucks by going with the FHD 144Hz display, but personally, I think the $40 premium for QHD is worth it.

This is one of the better 3070 deals I've seen...but be forewarned, ship date is estimated to be in mid-January. Please don't ask me if these will be LHR cards, or what to expect for hash rate - I have no idea. But even if they are LHR, overall, I still think it's a solid deal compared to other 3070 options I've seen on SD recently.

EDIT: I realize there have been better deals on 17" 3070-based Omens, but it seems like that's not an option right now. The 17s are currently offered with either a 3060 (underpowered) or 3080 (overpriced). You can't select a 3070. imo, 3060ti/3070 is the sweet spot...at least, for now.

EDIT 2: as of 12/19, if you have an edu account, the price on this config is now $1390.49 (using code 10GAMER2021). It's also a little cheaper on the regular (non-edu) store - $1440.

EDIT 3: apparently code HOLIDAY10 works, if 10GAMER2021 or WINTER10 fails.

This 3070 is not Max-P, but close, about 10 watts. A bit sad considering it's a large 16.1" 16:9 device, vs the 15" competitiors w/ max-P 3070's, but it still has good performance.

This is a solid deal overall if you can't get your hands on the Legion 7/7i 3070 which is almost always 1550$ w/ CB

Somehow I missed that deal, but it's still available [lenovo.com] - with 8% back from Rak, it's $1545. Might've gone for that if I'd seen it. Think I'll be OK with the Omen, though. Hopefully.

Yep that's what it went for many many weeks and months and it's definitely the ideal buy

I purchased one of these machines in November; it's quite a nice machine, but took several weeks to arrive from China, where it's assembled. FedEx delivered it, and they are terrible. Their import people must be overloaded because it took a couple days to get through. FedEx Online tracking kept promising delivery, then changing it at the last minute. The one day that they didn't say it would arrive is when it did. No knock at the door and they forged my signature saying I received it.

That's standard FedEx. My Omen 17t was delayed for more than a week total at Shanghai, Anchorage, and another hub and the FedEx guy also "missed" me twice while I am at home and building doorman is at front desk

Well, everything's assembled in China - Macs, Lenovos, you name it. It's just that these customized models aren't already sitting in an HP warehouse in the US. A lot of custom builds take weeks to deliver (i.e. I think Apple is quoting 7-8 weeks for the new MacBook Pros) - especially with all of the component shortages these days. And totally agreed re: fedex. They're a mess. I also had a "signature required" delivery simply left at my door just this week.

What do you think of the machine? Are you using it for gaming and/or mining? Any particular pros/cons worth mentioning?

The assembly time in China was very reasonable, but FedEx has a world of problems. I mention it simply so people will know it's not going to arrive quickly.

I've only had it a few days, but I'm favorably impressed by it. I use it for photography (processing), not gaming or mining. It's fast and (I think) easy to add a second SSD. Data transfer speed via USB C are particularly impressive, getting close to 0.8 GB/s. Pros: fast (CPU and GPU), very nice display (I got the higher res version), 16.1" is a nice screen size, easy to expand. Cons: mediocre keyboard (but as good as almost any other laptop keyboard) with very poor on/off key placement. It's the laptop that I was hoping I could get. Reasonable price.

I had the exact same experience! It was left at my door with no signature even though the tracking said it would be required.

The machine itself is phenomenal for anybody on the fence. 135w gpu exceeds my expectations.

The only things I dislike is that it does not have the number pad and it does have some fan whine when you are really pushing it. I've overclocked the memory a bit and it was very stable also.

FYI, price on this config seems to have dropped about $60. It's now $1390.49 with code 10GAMER2021 (WINTER10 didn't work for me)

I have no idea if HP price matches (probably not) but I'll see if I can get the lower price.

EDIT: thanks to avian's comment below, I realized that this price drop is ONLY on the edu store. Price on the regular/non-edu site will be around $1440.

Neither WINTER10 nor 10GAMER2021 work for me.
Get this error msg with 10GAMER2021: "The coupon code you have entered is not applicable for products in the cart."
HOLIDAY10 works but the price I get is 1439.99. What is your exact configuration?

Damn, I'm sorry, I didn't even realize it until your comment - but I was logged in under my .edu account. So I guess this price drop is only relevant to HP shoppers with edu accounts.

More specifically: the 4 upgrades I chose were: the 5800H/3070 combo, 16GB RAM, QHD display, and the RGB keyboard. Pre-coupon, in the edu store, the price is $1544.99 - $55 less than the $1599.99 price on the regular store. So I guess that explains the discrepancy between my price and yours. I'll amend my comment to make this clear.
