Not sure how much a laptop is worth without a discrete GPU. Where's the 'studio' in this?

I got the Acer deal from Costco with faster CPU, 15.6 touch, 1TB NVMe, and same integrated graphics for $799.

I have the original Surface Book, which frequently thinks that it's detached from the base and disables the touch pad. The sound occasionally goes off and only restart fixes it. From my experience, the weakest point of Microsoft's Surface Book/Studio lineup is the point where it converts into a tablet, and it fails after some use. For Surface Book, it's the section where the screen connects with the detachable base, and for the Studio, it's the pivot line where the screen rotates.

This should ideally be sold for like 1k, with those specs but maybe I'm missing something.

The Surface line has come a long way since the original Surface Book. I really would like the higher end version of this, but it is a bit pricey for what it is I do admit.

You are extra paying for the premium Microsoft design really. These are right next to MacBooks in quality.

I think M1 Macbooks are much cheaper than comparably configured Surface devices.

You'll get that call right after the 14th Gen CPUs are released.

Posts like these are so interesting to me, what are you comparing it to? The 14 inch Macbook Pro that just came out and competes with the Surface Laptop Studio starts at $2,000 (16GB Memory, 512GB SSD) and the Surface equivalent is $1,500. Are you comparing it to last year's computers or lower end models?

I agree the Surface Laptop Studio without a GPU for $1,300 is high, but I got it for $975 open box last week, and it is a nearly perfect laptop.

I think Microsoft slashed the price for Surface Studio by $300 recently. My comment was based on the previous price. I own the original Surface Book, and it's neither a good laptop nor a good tablet. The connection between the base and the detachable screen is the single point of failure for the entire device. I predict the similar case for the Surface Studio, don't know for sure of course. I might get the Surface Laptop sometime in the future, but definitely it would be an open box. We have an M1 MacBook in our house, and my impression of that device is much better than my Surface Book.

Clearly Microsoft agreed with you that the other design was no good, they completely redesigned the laptop and created a new product. This design doesn't at all function that way, so not sure why the screen would be an issue. And the price is right in the title, so I don't know what you even mean by that. I have a SB1 with Performance base, and it was a good laptop for me, but I never detached it to use as a tablet, and it is wildly slow all these years later due to the U series processor.

I feel like you're not actually looking at what the comparisons are, just saying your opinion that Macbooks are better than Surface in general, which is a totally fine belief to have. But if you look at the product lines and compare them correctly, like your M1 Macbook vs Surface Laptop 4 ($700 [bestbuy.com]), this laptop vs M1 Macbook Pro ($2,000 [bestbuy.com]), Macbook Air vs Surface Go, etc you'll see Surface is significantly cheaper than the Apple alternative and are very high end devices, but both certainly have their place. I agree that ~$800 M1 Macbooks are a better value than the $1,300 Surface Laptop Studio, but they serve entirely different purposes.

There are no comparable Macbooks because no MacBook has touchscreen or pen support.
