If you don't uncheck the box when signing up, you'll be set to auto-renew for $45 in a year. Once you're signed in at Samsclub.com, just go to account settings and check under membership for auto-renew option. Then uncheck the box if it's checked.

Edit: reading the reviews at Groupon, seems like more of the same, except it's worse since the Sam's employees say it's a Groupon problem so they can't help you. Wish Sam's would just offer a free or seriously discounted membership, since this BS game of chasing down promised gift cards is routinely an issue.
