Great console!!! Very underrated. If you don't need the storage or disc drive on the X, this is potentially a better value.

Not its not the old one. This is an xbox SERIES S not a ONE S.

I have all the systems and a 3080. This thing can't even play old Xbox games in 4k. My One X could do that years ago lol.

Last gen tech.

Resolution isn't the only thing that matters.

Go try to play that new Matrix Demo or Flight Simulator on your One X and get back to me how it won't run at all.

Then go look at the Forza horizon 5 comparisons and get back to me how the Series S has more foliage and world details than the One X.

Man, I know. I'm being dramatic.

I still think it's a bad value proposition and wouldn't recommend anyone buy it. We're running into limitations now, and the console generation is just getting started. Don't do this to yourself. It's $255 for a reason, while the other consoles are very difficult to get at full price. Nobody wants it, it's a reluctant purchase.
It's not 255 anymore than series x is 425. Series S has also sold more consoles than any other console this holiday season. It is a great value for those who don't care about 4k gaming. Obviously you like Series X and this isn't for you, but lots of other people are enjoying this console just fine.

Guys, I screwed up quite a bit and am a total Xbox newbie (parent). Kid asked for Xbox for Christmas (only thing he asked for), bc all his friends are on Xbox (I bought him a PS4Pro a couple years ago)

Maybe 2 months ago there was no stock available for the S, so thinking that inventories (esp this year) were going to be depleted, I bought the All Access plan (0% interest, pay $25/month for 2 years for the console, and GamePass Ultimate).

I know, in hindisght this is a horrible deal, especially as I saw that the S stock actually got better closer to Christmas.

ANYway, I am already looking to boost storage bc the first game he downloaded already takes up almost half the total storage! WTH. So he can only play one or two games at a time? That's crazy IMO.

What should I do? Plunk down for an expansion drive or card or whatever, an external drive, or just try to upgrade to Xbox X since they now seem to be available as well?

We have no legacy Xbox discs so the lack of disc drive is not an issue FWIW. He plays on a 55" TV, so even the resolution difference is not that big of a deal...but the storage...ooof. Didn't really see that being such an immediate problem!

Thanks for any non-snarky advice.

You have two options. You can buy the official Series S/expansion that gives you about 1 TB of space for about $200. You can also buy a normal SSD/HDD and transfer any games that you are currently not playing on there. Whenever you want to play them, you'll have to transfer into the internal drive. It takes management but you'll save a lot of money. The transfer of an SSD is faster than a HDD but it will serve the same purpose.

The internal is enough to store 3-5 games average or even more depending on size of game.

can you just plug the external HDD with games that had already been loaded from the previous xbox one console and load some of those games to this series s console and play? or the series s console will format any new HDD devices the first time it detects them before can be used as external storages?

Yes you can, but only for Xbox One games. Xbox Series games have to play from the new Series storage, so internal storage or expansion card.

You can copy Series games to an external USB drive to just to store them there. But have to copy them back to the internal or expansion to play them. This is helpful for those with slower internet and don't want to redownload.

I bought a 4TB external to just store all my Xbox 1 and backwards compatible games. But even then, I still copy some of these to the faster storage if I'm playing something a lot and want the slightly faster load times of the NVME drives.

People have been buying Series X with the microsoft rewards points redemptions (which are also gift cards). So If there is a limit it exceeds the MSRP+tax of a series X.

So, very few games are 150gb. Most are 1-30gb. Even with a couple huge games and mostly normal games you should be able to fit 10-15 games on a series S. If your internet is 200mbps or faster just have your kid delete the games hes not currently playing. Learn to only play 10 games at a time. There is no reason to need hundreds of games downloaded at once.

If your internet is slow as molasses, then you will want storage options.

Also, at least right now, almost the entire Series X/S library on gamepass will play off an external HDD. There are almost no games that are Series X/S exclusives. This will change as time goes forward and more current gen games release, but its a good solution for right now.

Actually, downloading Warzone, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Valhalla will net you over 300 GB. I also have the Xs upgrades of Valhalla, Call of Duty, and other games that force you to transfer to the internal drive. Many games include the XS upgrade so if you have a next gen console chances are that you're getting the upgraded game.

Thanks, good to know.

He's downloaded the hunting game (57GB) Apex Legends (76GB), Fortnite (23 GB) and Halo Infinite (48GB) so far (200GB ish total)

Actual storage space after OS and system files is 365 gig I noticed, so he could add a few more games still and be ok. Not as dire as it seemed initially.
