Last gen tech.
Resolution isn't the only thing that matters.
Go try to play that new Matrix Demo or Flight Simulator on your One X and get back to me how it won't run at all.
Then go look at the Forza horizon 5 comparisons and get back to me how the Series S has more foliage and world details than the One X.
I still think it's a bad value proposition and wouldn't recommend anyone buy it. We're running into limitations now, and the console generation is just getting started. Don't do this to yourself. It's $255 for a reason, while the other consoles are very difficult to get at full price. Nobody wants it, it's a reluctant purchase.
Maybe 2 months ago there was no stock available for the S, so thinking that inventories (esp this year) were going to be depleted, I bought the All Access plan (0% interest, pay $25/month for 2 years for the console, and GamePass Ultimate).
I know, in hindisght this is a horrible deal, especially as I saw that the S stock actually got better closer to Christmas.
ANYway, I am already looking to boost storage bc the first game he downloaded already takes up almost half the total storage! WTH. So he can only play one or two games at a time? That's crazy IMO.
What should I do? Plunk down for an expansion drive or card or whatever, an external drive, or just try to upgrade to Xbox X since they now seem to be available as well?
We have no legacy Xbox discs so the lack of disc drive is not an issue FWIW. He plays on a 55" TV, so even the resolution difference is not that big of a deal...but the storage...ooof. Didn't really see that being such an immediate problem!
Thanks for any non-snarky advice.
You have two options. You can buy the official Series S/expansion that gives you about 1 TB of space for about $200. You can also buy a normal SSD/HDD and transfer any games that you are currently not playing on there. Whenever you want to play them, you'll have to transfer into the internal drive. It takes management but you'll save a lot of money. The transfer of an SSD is faster than a HDD but it will serve the same purpose.
The internal is enough to store 3-5 games average or even more depending on size of game.
Yes you can, but only for Xbox One games. Xbox Series games have to play from the new Series storage, so internal storage or expansion card.
You can copy Series games to an external USB drive to just to store them there. But have to copy them back to the internal or expansion to play them. This is helpful for those with slower internet and don't want to redownload.
I bought a 4TB external to just store all my Xbox 1 and backwards compatible games. But even then, I still copy some of these to the faster storage if I'm playing something a lot and want the slightly faster load times of the NVME drives.

If your internet is slow as molasses, then you will want storage options.
Also, at least right now, almost the entire Series X/S library on gamepass will play off an external HDD. There are almost no games that are Series X/S exclusives. This will change as time goes forward and more current gen games release, but its a good solution for right now.

Actually, downloading Warzone, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Valhalla will net you over 300 GB. I also have the Xs upgrades of Valhalla, Call of Duty, and other games that force you to transfer to the internal drive. Many games include the XS upgrade so if you have a next gen console chances are that you're getting the upgraded game.

Thanks, good to know.
He's downloaded the hunting game (57GB) Apex Legends (76GB), Fortnite (23 GB) and Halo Infinite (48GB) so far (200GB ish total)
Actual storage space after OS and system files is 365 gig I noticed, so he could add a few more games still and be ok. Not as dire as it seemed initially.
