The extended films are exceptionally insufferable because of the extended "comedy" scenes, and they got a lot of flack for it at release and still do (primarily the reason why people don't talk about The Hobbit as much as The Lord of the Rings films). The Hobbit really only needed to be a duology but lord did the film-makers stretch the movies out unnecessarily.
