Not worth it when the standard bluray, theatrical 1080p disc version is $13. Good for collectors, but these aren't films you want the extended edition of.

The extended films are exceptionally insufferable because of the extended "comedy" scenes, and they got a lot of flack for it at release and still do (primarily the reason why people don't talk about The Hobbit as much as The Lord of the Rings films). The Hobbit really only needed to be a duology but lord did the film-makers stretch the movies out unnecessarily.

I havent seen the extended editions of the Hobbit, but I did see some extended scene of the battle scene in the 3rd movie and I thought it was good. Not sure how good the other extended scenes are.

I thought The Desolation of Smaug was the weakest of the three and a waste of time. Maybe I need to watch it again but I see it as filling in the gap to make the series a trilogy.
