I know this deal on the free iPhone SE for new customers has been posted, but I don't think many people know about the free upgrade for existing customers with older 3G incompatible phones.

Cricket/AT&T networks are turning off 3G service in February 2022, making many phones incompatible. If you are receiving texts from Cricket saying your phone is incompatible, you are eligible for a free iPhone SE (or Moto G Stylus 5G) upgrade. This deal will work for all lines on your account that are receiving the Cricket message about incompatible phones.

When you upgrade a line through the website you will see the iPhone price of $249.99. Click to proceed to checkout, and before placing the order you will see "3G $249.99 Targeted Offer-Mfg/Dist Coupon - $249.99", making the phone free.

I was told by the Cricket store owner that this deal should be good until Jan 6th.

Hi,
I am existing Cricket cust with 3G phone which is getting discontinued by Cricket. So I already placed an order with TMobile to switch to TMobile from Cricket, waiting for IPhone 13 to ship in another 20 days. Can I order and get this phone from Cricket to use in the next 20 days and cancel the cricket service (switching to TMobile)?
Seems like a free $200 (Sell on Ebay) from Cricket if I do this?
Are there any charges from Cricket that I am missing in this?

Thanks for your replies.
OK...let's see.

I don't see why not. There isn't really anything that I see that said you have to stay on Cricket for x number of days after getting the SE.

I used my old phone and I got a text saying " this is not eligible for activation on the cricket network. Cricket's high definition voice network requires high-definition voice network requires use of compatible device." And my account got suspended while adding the upgraded phone in the cart.
I got same issue as you

I pay around $87 per month for 5 lines with Kroger card. I have more coverage than Metro. 10 GB per line and never used more than that in each line. I always use WIFI at home (Google Fiber).
I pay 4 for $130 with no deprioritization ever. I have service everywhere. I never have to check signal bars, because my phone "just works". I keep 5G on and it works great. I had 7 lines on T-Mobile for $96, 3 were free unused lines and I gave that up to go back to Cricket, because service was so awful. Had to keep 5G off otherwise full bars could equal no data connection. Dropped calls, broken up calls, no service etc.

Hey guys, do the people that got the free upgrade got a message that explicitly says they get a free phone upgrade? My message just says that my phone will stop working after February 2022 and ONLY the upgrade fee is on them? I'm planning on going to a Cricket store today, has anyone done it through them, is it simpler?

So only the targeted accounts would get the coupon? I don't see no such $249.99 off coupon anywhere throughout the check out process. Help pls. My parents could definitely use the upgrade

Only if your parents are on non-whitelisted devices. If you went through the link and no coupon then you're not on that list.

Yes. You can order and it won't change the plan. But if you are doing online only one order at a time. You need to activate the new one before placing the 2nd order. You ca go to store and get the same promotion. I am on grandfathered 5 lines for $100 and replaced 3 lines with Moto G stylus 5G. There is also a limit of 3 orders online.
Do you have to pay for the activation fee when you upgraded you phones at the store? Thank you

As others have noted, dropping your cricket Sim into an outdated phone will only lead to your account being suspended and you having to call cricket and wait on hold for a half an hour to have them unsuspend it. Strangely, it also carrier locked my current 2016 MODEL iPhone SE which was originally an AT&T prepaid phone. I had to go to the AT&T unlock portal and then have them unlock it again which then required me to erase the phone and restart it to get the carrier lock off.

I've been on cricket for four years and it has gotten better over time. The only downside is there really isn't much of a subsidy on phones for existing customers. You are really incentivized to change carriers when you need a free new phone.

i'm not putting my sim into outdated phone. my supposed outdated moto will continue to work after feb if i dont do anything. my question is what happens after i activated the iphone with the new sim that comes with it and afterwards i choose to go back to the outdated working phone which as the old sim in it already. will that phone continue to work?

i know taking the old sim out of the outdated phone and putting it back in will cause that phone to be suspended but im not sure what happens if i never take it out in the scenerio above

I was able to claim an iphone se and the moto g stylus 5g for my parents. The iphone was exactly as expected. The moto g stylus came preinstalled with a lot of games and other apps I did not want. It also popped up a full screen ad for some service it is pushing after I unlocked my device once. That is completely unacceptable. I uninstalled the junk apps and other cricket apps I did not want but after a few reboots they reinstalled themselves. After some googling, I found out I need to disable an app called "Mobile Services" that cricket uses to reinstall things the user uninstalls. Mobile services has nothing to do with how your phone functions (it is not "Carrier Services" or something important like that). It is rebranding of Digital Turbine Ignite (DTI).

I went a step further and used ADB to remove the Mobile Services app (aka DTI) from my phone. After enabling android debugging in developer options and connecting the phone to my desktop, I entered the following into terminal.

adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.dti.cricket

I then uninstalled all the junk apps again (and used ADB to uninstall the apps that I couldn't uninstall the usual way). I assume Mobile Services may reinstall itself after an update, so be prepared to delete it again.

Besides that, the moto g stylus 5g seems great for an older parent. Huge screen, huge battery. No wireless charging and no google pay (no NFC chip) but an older adult may not really care about those things.
I am looking to debloat a stylus as well. Is there a good resource that lists which apps are safe to remove?

My experience of trying to game the offer was pretty similar to the others. Placed SIM in old phone, line got suspended, received text for not being supported beyond 02/2022, unable to upgrade as the line itself is grayed out, app does show the offer but redirect to website for the same result. Waited for 5 minutes to get a rep on chat, rep asked if I recently change phone, rep spent 20 minutes and came back said not eligible to upgrade and removed suspension for the line. Placed SIM back in original phone, tested text/data to be fine.

It might have been possible to put the upgrade in shopping cart prior to turning on old phone with SIM or something, but didn't bother keep trying it out. However, with the message showing up in the app, there is a chance that physical store can pull some magic or just honor it, but it's an hour away so didn't want to waste 2 hours on an Sunday for it.

I wonder if it's possible to put the sim in an old phone, get CS to unsuspend account, then check online to see if the offer shows up. If not, maybe try another CS and see if they'll do it. This does seem like quite some work to try to get a free phone though.
