I don't know much about WEN but are they about the same as ShopFox?

Here is a 6" on a shopfox with otherwise similar specs

I have the Wahuda version of this jointer and I urge anyone looking into this style of jointer to avoid them like the plague. The Wahuda is probably the best version of this style available as it uses actual carbide inserts(not high speed steel) as well as cast iron infeed/outfeed beds(not aluminum). Those upgrades are nice features but overall the design for these jointer is flawed.

First off the beds are extremely hard to get coplanar and once they are, they're impossible to get to actually lock and stay there. After moderate use, both beds will slip out of coplanar and will need to be readjusted. If you try to raise/lower the infeed table it will not adjust level, the side closer to the cutterhead drops faster so it will require a recalibration to get back to coplanar.

Bottom line, avoid. If you're looking for an affordable benchtop jointer, this is what you want.

I see. Thanks for your input! I feel like I recall grizzly being a pretty reputable name. Do you know anything about Shop fox?

Shopfox is made by grizzly, pretty much the exact same brand just different colors. I had this jointer before I got the Wahuda, wish I would have kept it!

$400 on a WEN? That's a bad call. It's a Jointer, sure, but it's still a WEN so it's going to be highly flawed and have a short life.

You're better off making a jointer setup with a router, or a powered hand planer. (JSK-KOUBOU on YouTube shows how to make a great one. He is the master of tool making.)

So either buy a good 4, or 6 inch jointer without the "spiral head" (I wouldn't trust WEN with making a spiral head in the first place.) Just don't waste $400 on this thing. You will regret it.

Normally, I avoid Grizzly and ShopFox because Grizzly is horrible with shipping, and repairs. Their tools aren't bad, not great, but not bad. So in this case, I'd take the ShopFox over the WEN ANYDAY!!!

WEN is fine for smaller, non-precision items. But a jointer or a planer is something I'd not get from them even if they were 80% off. They're flat out dangerous. And the price of frustration in calibrating them constantly, just as you said, is not worth the "savings".

Even if you are a DIY enthusiast,, this is a bad deal.

Ive owned the non helical 6" wen version. Honestly its not terrible for its intended purpose but that purpose is limited. Its not a big motor so you really wanna take slow shallow passes and as is the real drawback of ALL these benchtop models they arent meant for anything very long. If all you do is small projects occasionally this is great. If i was starting over again from scratch I would invest in a solid planer first, do all my jointing on a planer sled, and save for a free standing jointer like the ridgid (or grizzly, shopfox, powermatic, etc) or any other free standing jointer with long beds and a solid cast iron fence.

Agreed with Porgy, if you're starting out then buy a planer instead. You can use the planer to face joint and a table saw to edge-joint – both jigs are easy to make. Even with a benchtop planer I often use my table saw to edge joint anyway. Not to say that these jointers are garbage – mine is quite useful sometimes – but if you think you might need a bigger one eventually anyway, I say hold off.

It's worth pointing out that "spiral" doesn't mean "helical". This does have tiny square cutters rather than long blades, however they are not angled like they are on a helical cutter, so they don't "shear" the wood like the Shelix, but still cut straight which doesn't have the tearout-prevention benefits of a helical cutterhead. This thing only has 16 of those little squares, too. So actual total cutting-edge length is probably only about the length of one straight knife. The *only* benefits of this design, is A) that if/when the cutter chips or dulls, you can rotate it, and B) each rotation takes out so much less material that they can get away with a lower-power motor. That's it. By every other measure, this is WORSE than any other all-else-being-equal straight knife jointer.
