January/Febuary is a great time to buy electronics as suppliers tend to dump inventory they were hoping to sell for Christmas but didn't.

You're losing out on manufacturer's warranty and WD Discovery software requires internet product activation. Not sure it's worth the $10 savings.

How is this different than the WD_Black 5tb that I bought for $100 a week or so ago? That particular drive is marketed as a "gaming" drive and just so happens I plan on using with my ps4. Should I buy this one instead and save $10??

This one has hardware encryption. Other than that, both offer the same 3 year warranty, possibly same drives inside with USB port soldered on (not shuck-able)

Great price for a portable 5TB with 3 year warranty.

After some reading, it seems that the hardware encryption is more of a con than a plus. If the board fails, it pretty much makes the drive useless.

If the board or the drive itself fails you are going to be restoring from your backup anyway. You do backup your 5TB of important linux isos, right?
