Consumer Reports rates air filters for airflow resistance. Air filters above MERV 10 perform best and depending on brand, still offer good airflow resistance. Wire cutter found similar results. A MERV 8 isn't doing a whole lot, especially for allergies. Above MERV 13 is what you should avoid for residential as these hospital grade ones would be less airflow for HVAC. But even MERV 12 & 13 were rated well for airflow resistance. Key is avoid having them in for too long and getting too much blockage.

While HVAC techs typically recommend against MERV 8+, there "is a mountain of owner testimony that MERV 11, 12, and even 13 filters have worked just fine in their systems for years. As well, an often-cited comprehensive independent test of MERV 8 to 13 filters' effects on HVAC airflow and energy consumption (a proxy for how hard the equipment is working) concluded that even "if no accommodations are made for the greater pressure drop of high-MERV filters, air flow and energy penalties are not likely to be severe—at least, not until the filter is loaded with dirt."

Thus manufactures and techs are probably more on the cautious side to be extra sure. Again, don't let it get loaded with dirt before changing.

Last thread many people reported received 1 filter instead 12 filters in a big box.
Been using them for over two years on two of my units with no issues whatsoever. I tend to have to replace them every 6 weeks instead of 3 months because they do a great job at capturing dust, and thus start turning gray at that 6 week mark.

I bought these back in 2018 for $54 for 12 and felt pretty Slick. Working well thus far, just re-upped.

Apparently too little airflow by these better quality filters can cause damage to your unit. HVAC techs don't recommend them. MERV 8 might not be too bad as I think it is the middle of the road.

Doesn't kill the deal, but sales tax for me (California) is based on regular price of $99, before the 50% savings. just FYI

Your incorrect, I'm in CA as well and you only get taxed on the actual sale price.

Here's a better list with all the available sizes. [homedepot.com] Here you can pick the filter size you need from the list on the left.
