While HVAC techs typically recommend against MERV 8+, there "is a mountain of owner testimony that MERV 11, 12, and even 13 filters have worked just fine in their systems for years. As well, an often-cited comprehensive independent test of MERV 8 to 13 filters' effects on HVAC airflow and energy consumption (a proxy for how hard the equipment is working) concluded that even "if no accommodations are made for the greater pressure drop of high-MERV filters, air flow and energy penalties are not likely to be severe—at least, not until the filter is loaded with dirt."
Thus manufactures and techs are probably more on the cautious side to be extra sure. Again, don't let it get loaded with dirt before changing.

I wish they would make the frames with thicker cardboard. The frames on these are almost paper thin.
This!
In addition, I've noticed that they're a little undersized as well, more so than other hvac air filter brands. Such that unfiltered airflow may occur around the perimeter. I suspect that it's not uncommon for larger size filters, say 20x30 or others, to collapse completely.

I think FPR 5 is the same as Merv 8. That's what I'm finding online. FPR is a different measurement but it's what's used by Home Depot and some of the "other brands". They make different qualities up to "10" where merv goes 1-13 instead of 1-10. Even Rheem and some of the name brand companies list both. My last one was a Merv 8/FPR 4 from Rheem. I guess an HDX 5 would be slightly better than a Merv 8 by that standard. I could be wrong. I'm no pro..

Merv 8 is HDX's FPR 4-5. They're about the same. Thanks for your post. I cancelled and ordered Home Depot. Nice find.
Shows $49 for me
