Using GameStop PUR $5 certificates on digital currency was a popular slick deal, turning a $15 membership into a $45 profit.
Effective immediately, $5 monthly reward certificates are no longer applicable to digital currency. I just tried to use it in store and was told it no longer works and I have linked a post from someone posting the internal memo.
Hopefully this PSA can save people some gas or rile up some protests from customers to change their policy.

Also did this with Best Buy's deal for Big Brain Academy for $15. Brought it to $10 with my GameStop coupon. Pretty good for a new sealed game that released 2 weeks prior.

I was referring to the Pro monthly $5 certificate.
I tried to order a Pokémon booster pack using GameStop app and in the checkout page, it mentioned that the January certificate is not applicable to this order. I am able to apply the certificate to other items though (a controller).
I will still try to check if I am able to get it in store.

I think it's up to manager discretion. Awhile back I had one manger tell me they can't refund a game I tried to return since it came up as free with the coupon. The issue was that I didn't want to use my $5 on the game but they said there was nothing they could do.
Another time they accidentally redeemed it when I was picking up my pre-order. Gave the game as a gift and then they changed their mind. Returned it not expecting to receive the $5 back but the cashier caught it and said "oh looks like you used your $5 coupon on this game, I'll just put $5 on a gift card for you."
How is it foolish if I was picking up those games regardless 😃
